American Idiot Movie HBO

American Idiot Movie in the Works at HBO, Says Green Day Frontman

Now that September has ended, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong is wide awake — and he’s got some big news to share.

In a new interview with NME, Armstrong reveals that American Idiot — the Broadway musical about three frustrated young men looking for meaning in the big city, based on Green Day’s 2004 album of the same name — is being made into a movie for HBO.

“We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there,” Armstrong says. “I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”

Armstrong is also reportedly reprising his role of drug dealer St. Jimmy.

American Idiot ran on Broadway from April 2010 to April 2011, nabbing several awards — including two Tonys and a Grammy — along the way. A series of international productions have opened over the years; the next one begins in Rio de Janeiro in 2017.

TVLine has reached out to HBO for comment. In the meantime, watch a medley of American Idiot songs below, then drop a comment with your thoughts.

My son played Johnny at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year and the show is being bought back this year. If you are coming to Edinburgh in August, come along! If the Johnny part is still available in the film then im sure he’d be up open to offers :-)
