Dynasty Reboot

Dynasty Reboot in the Works at The CW; Updated Version Will Be More Diverse

No strangers to #RichPeopleProblems, Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are returning to The CW to reboot Dynasty, one of the most iconic dramas in television history.

For those unfamiliar with the original series, which ran on ABC from 1981 to 1989, Dynasty followed the ongoing feud between two of America’s richest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys.

The CW’s Dynasty will put a “new spin” on the original story by transforming Krystle Jennings — a young secretary marrying into the Carrington family, originally played by Linda Evans — into a Hispanic woman named Cristal Jennings, our sister site Deadline reports.

Schwartz and Savage are writing the pilot, along with Revenge writer/producer Sallie Patrick. Dynasty creators Esther and Richard Shapiro are also on board, and Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski will co-executive produce.

The CW is, of course, no stranger to adapting classic properties for a new generation. 90210 — a continuation of Beverly Hills, 90210 — ran for five seasons on the network (2008–2013), while Melrose Place — a continuation of the original Fox drama — ran for just one season (2009–2010).

Enjoy this clip from the original series, featuring a classic catfight between Evans and Joan Collins, then drop your thoughts on Dynasty 2.0 in comment below.

I read a lot of mean comments , people having problems with black people’s skin, stay pressed, because african americans are in this country to stay. Look Blake had a half sister who was african american . that’s the Dihann Caroll who i a contemporary of er.. the british lass Johanne collins. They were both brought into the show for their old school 50s flair. All cw will have to do is to introduce Miss devereaux’s family .Black people’s existence is very much justified in the show.

There is a gay white dude on there too . so the show was already trying it with diversity.

        • Brianna says:

@lechatnoir — get over it! This isn’t about “skin color”. It’s about placating to the “diversity” rhetoric that’s in the process of destroying our Academy’s integrity, iconic TV shows, owning the leftist news media, etc., etc.. I wonder……. Will the viewers ever see a WHITE reboot of Sanford & Sons? The Jeffersons? Good Times? The Cosby Show? Empire? Oh wait, Empire IS a black Dynasy. Nevermind. ,

      • I wish people like you would stop making silly comments like this

  1. c-mo says:

Isn’t this already on FOX as Empire? At least with it on the CW nobody will watch and it will go quietly into the night.

  2. Ro says:

Didn’t they try this with Dallas?

  3. LT says:

Better off picking up the new DALLAS when it got cancelled by TNT. That was all set and in decent shape.

  4. A. D. says:

    Sigh……………I’m disappointed in you CW!!!!!

  5. Iris says:

Hey, the Dallas reboot already did it with Elena.

    • Iris says:

And on the CW, the show will NOT be as diverse as it used to be since it’s the Ageist Network. Dynasty used to have main characters in their 40s and their 50s who had storylines, too! They’d better reboot Logan’s Run instead, at least they’d have a reason for having no character over 30.

      • Kiwi3 says:

They need to have a way to “upvote” or “like” a post, Iris.
        You win with this one!

Such a bad idea. No original ideas out there are there?
We had Dallas. Now we have McGyver. They’re talking about Magnum, PI!
And dear gods, I heard they’re going to remake The Lion King!

  6. just make a new show with a new name why keep remaking stuff?!?

    • Lange says:

Because they trade on the name and they lack the imagination required for original ideas.

      • drhenning says:

The reason is today’s TV environment is so tough that networks want something familiar to get people to try a new show…

        • Lange says:

The problem is that people who are nostalgic for the original end up being offended by the reboot. This is particularly true when they change the gender, race or any other key factor.

  7. Douglas from Brazil says:

Of course it has to be diverse if not then they wouldn’t do it.

  8. Let’s hope the champagne isn’t burnt.

  9. lena says:

    who asked for this

  10. Matt says:

Not excited about this… unless they cast Melinda Clarke as Alexis.

  11. Lex says:

Yet, we still don’t have a Models Inc. reboot?

  12. Paolo says:

    It’s Krystle, not Crystal… 😑

  13. johnboy91884 says:

This is a complete remake they are talking about. Whoever wrote this didn’t even spell KRYSTLE right. Now, they are planning on making her a Hispanic woman? How stupid is this? I hate to say it, but if it isn’t a continuation with the original characters and cast, then I hope it never gets off the ground.

    • "A" says:

Her name is spelled “Cristal” in the reboot because she is Hispanic
( Cristal is a brand name of a Champagne, “it is the iconic $300 Champagne knocked back by hip-hop moguls and Hollywood royalty (often straight from the bottle in Cadillac Escalades and hot tubs” )

      • c-mo says:

If the character is Hispanic then it’s Cristal because they don’t use the ‘h’ in Spanish. If your name is Christina in English, then in Spanish it would be Cristina.

  14. They shoyld do a dynastuy with the next generation as the tentpoles. Danny, Kristina Little Blake etc

  15. whisperintherain says:

The character Linda Evans played on the original was named Krystle, not Crystal (it was spelit Krystle in the official titles of a number of episodes over the show’s nine-season run, and the daughter she had with Blake was subsequently named Krystina, with that specific spelling).

Given that the premise seems to revolve primarily around the rivalry between Cristal and Fallon, allow me to add I find it a little strange that you chose to illustrate this with a picture of Joan Collins as Alexis, especially since the Deadline article you refer to specifies that it is unclear at the moment whether a new version of Alexis will appear or not.

Anyway, not sure I would watch a Dynasty reboot on a regular basis, but let’s see how the project takes shape, it could turn out fun if properly done.

  16. Wooster182 says:

If they hire Ed Westwick, I’m ok with this.

  17. Ram510 says:

    No please

  18. Stop The Insanity!!!!!! says:

    ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!

(Yes, I shouted, for good reason

  19. c-su says:

Not gonna lie, I’m actually into this. TV’s missing a show that combined all elements present in Dynasty (Soapy-Drama, Grandeur/Wealth, Fashion/Production Design, Family Feuds) There’s nothing as soapy and fashionably pleasing to watch on TV. (Empire is close, but it is very heavy and deep into the music industry) I remember that moment Joan Collins’ character made her debut, it was such a cliffhanger, soapy but so good. We don’t get that elements of escapism anymore. (Last we had it was Revenge but it diminished in grandeur and execution till it ended)

  20. Antonio Colby says:

Dynasty is a classic. Some things should be left as they were. I mean come on now REALLY crystal Hispanic so is Alexis going too be African American?. What about Dominique she gone be Chinese good luck on this.

  21. Joe says:

EMMA SAMMS for the lead! Give her a role. Man she was the hot Fallon

  22. "A" says:

    no, No, and NO !
This needs to be Dynasty: The Next Generation NOT a DAMN reboot.

I’d love to see Dynasty: The Next Generation with Jeff Colby & Fallon Carrington Colby’s children L.B ( Little Blake ) Colby ( played by Brant Daugherty of PLL ) now 34 and his sisters Lauren Constance Colby ( played by Emily VanCamp of Revenge ) now 29 and the never before seen on screen Lucy Alexis Colby ( played by Danielle Campbell of The Originals ) now 22, their cousin and Steven Carrington & Samantha Josephine “Sammy Jo” Dean/Reece Carrington’s son Steven Daniel “Danny” Carrington, jr. ( played by Josh Henderson of Dallas ) now 34, their cousin and Adam Carrington & Karen Atkinson’s son Adam Alexander “Alex” Carrington the II ( played by Andrew Lees of The Originals ) now 28, their never before seen on screen cousin and Amanda Carrington’s daughter Grace ( played by Sasha Pieterse of PLL ) now 20, their Aunt and Blake & Krystle Carrington’s daughter Krystina Emma Carrington ( played by Claire Holt of The Originals ) now 32, and their cousin and Dominique Deveraux’s daughter Jacqueline “Jackie” Deveraux’s daughter Laura Deveraux ( played by Kat Graham of TVD ) now 28 as the shows main family family members. Miles, Monica, and Bliss Colby’s children might also be apart of Dynasty: The Next Generation.

Joan Collins, Linda Evans, Diahann Carroll, Jack Coleman, Emma Samms, Heather Locklear, John James etc would make guest cameos from time to time when needed if they so desired to be apart of the show.

    • Kiwi3 says:

Ok, THIS I agree with! “A””s idea. Dynasty- next generation makes a hell of a lot more sense than a reboot. THAT I’d actually take a chance on.
The other I would intentionally “boycott”. Just like I did with nu90210 and nuMelrose.
But then I’m not the CW’s demographic.

    • Ci says:

  23. ScottJ says:

I wonder where The CW thinks it will have room on its schedule for this.

    • "A" says:

They don’t have room for this and that is why it won’t even get picked up especially with Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Riverdale, and Frequency surely getting renewed, iZombie, The 100, Jane the Virgin, and The Originals, up against it for a possible renewal and even if next season Reign, No Tomorrow, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend were cancelled leaving three spots available on the network it would still have to win a spot over Casa, Mara Hari, Stick Man, Life Sentence, Weaveworld, The Lost Boys, Blowback, Ghost, Run and Gunn, and Rise pilots

  24. Bun Ho says:

Remember when people were cast because of their TALENT. Adding cast members because of their ethnicity is the WORST kind of tokenism!

  25. Writerpatrick says:

Prime-time soap operas really worked for MyNetworkTV. And don’t we already have The Cardashians?

  26. Frank says:

Bring back TNT’s reboot of Dallas. I was a very entertaining show and TV needs Linda Gray back on the screen.

  27. Bri says:

So the tag is “Same show from 30 years ago with more color?” Why bother coming up with original ideas? Sheesh! Make it stop!

  28. Dude says:

This will never work on The CW because with Josh and Stephanie on board, it will never be what it should be if you’re going to reboot Dynasty. It should be an over-the-top campy soap opera, the type of show television is currently desperately lacking. Instead, however, it’ll be just another self-serious Gossip Girl/Melrose Place clone. It’s a shame cause with someone like Ryan Murphy or Diablo Cody behind the wheel, this project could be killer.

  29. Just give the show a new name and new character names instead of intentionally trying to cash in on an established property. There is nothing wrong with a show about a Rich White Guy falling in love with his latina secretary but you don’t have to call it Dynasty.

  30. I’m not excited about this for one simple reason. ‘Dynasty’ was interesting because it was a show about scandalous mature people with mature people problems. Is CW planning on hiring a significant amount of actors who are over 30? Create a brand new show inspired by ‘Dynasty’ but don’t call what is sure to be another show about 20-year-olds ‘Dynasty’.

  31. Antony says:

Is anyone that watches The CW even old enough to remember Dynasty?

    • MMD says:

LOL – I know that was rhetorical but it just made laugh hysterically because it’s so true! I’m sure that none of them can even imagine the massive shoulder pads either.

    • MMD says:

LOL – I know that was rhetorical but it just made laugh hysterically because it’s so true! I’m sure that none of them can even imagine the massive shoulder pads either.
Anthony – thanks for the great laugh. :-)

  32. Maria says:

So…Hollywood is out of original ideas. Got it.

  33. wylma says:

CW is just not able to create sustainable reboots….

  34. Drago Harley says:

Calling it now: Vanessa Williams as Alexis. She basically played Alexis on Ugly Betty. She would be fantastic as Alexis in this new Dynasty.

  35. Krystle says:

Please, no!!!! I am contented with the original. Don’t ruin it.

  36. Kar says:

Gossip Girl and 90210 in one.

  37. The moment I saw the cast would be diverse I’d knew that bring out the haters
