Colbert and Meyers to Trump: 'F—k You' for Blaming Birtherism on Clinton

Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers each decimated Donald Trump on Monday for insinuating that Hillary Clinton led the movement that claimed President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.

The Late Show and Late Night hosts put all of their cards on the table amid lengthy fact-checking segments that proved the Republican presidential nominee actually led the birtherism movement, since as early as 2011.

“Here’s the deal: You don’t get to flog this issue for five years and then act like you’re correcting everybody else,” Colbert said. “We’re not crazy. We were there. We all saw you do it. Even the people who support you saw you do it. It’s why they support you!”

Both hosts chastised Trump for implying that it was up to him to “finish” the birther movement by declaring that our Commander-in-Chief was born in the U.S. during a press conference at one of his hotels, half a decade after Obama released his full birth certificate. At one point, Colbert and Meyers looked into the camera and, word for word, expressed the exact same sentiment: “F—k you, exclamation point.”

“[Q]uestioning the legitimacy of the first black president was the centerpiece of Donald Trump’s political career,” Meyers argued. “You don’t get to peddle racist rhetoric… and decide when it’s over. We decide when it’s over ― and it’s certainly not over after a 30-second statement in the middle of a hotel commercial … The bottom line is this: Trump built his career on a racist lie because he’s a racist and a liar.”

Watch Colbert (above) and Meyers (below) tear Trump a new one, then head to the comments and tell us if you appreciate their new no-holds-barred approach to addressing the presidential hopeful.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Look, I like TV Line, but if I keep see these types of articles here, I’ll be going elsewhere for my TV news.

    • Mac says:

Because poor baby Trump gets called out on his bs?

      • Rob Horine says:

Cause this is a blog about TV entertainment. Not politics.

        • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Yes, and you will find that both Colbert and Seth have shows on TV. Where they discuss all sorts of things, sometimes politics. —Mgmt.

          • Rob Horine says:

Sure, but when this site bends into politics, it leaves nothing but hurt feelings and mean words.

Let’s save the mean words on how bad the new shows are. Okay?

          • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Six more weeks, Rob. I know you can do it.

          • MMD says:

LOL Matt. If the world has to put up with this nonsense, then I’m sure Rob can survive six weeks. :-)

          • Decimator from on high says:

Yes, but when you use terms like “decimated” in the first sentence, it’s clear which side of the fence you are on. Just report…they didn’t “decimate” Trump. They just echoed the talking points of the left, where no one can think for themselves. Clinton’s staff has admitted that a campaign intern back in the 2008 campaign first floated it. She may not be directly responsible for it, but it WAS HER campaign. I bet that part was left out of the “decimation”. As for him “finishing” it, they sure did jump on that bone, too, although not to point out that it was because Trump kept harping on it that our “transparent” president finally released his birth certificate. That’s what is meant by “finishing it”. I know Democrats don’t understand the meaning of most words, but c’mon…

It is actually a requirement that the president be a U.S. citizen, not that they release their tax records…but darn it, that bad man won’t release his tax records while he’s being audited! Booooooooo!

          • Robin says:

            Matt for President!!!!

          • Katherine215 says:

“Decimator,” TVLine is not a news journalism site; they are not required to be unbiased. And frankly, Trump is far too dangerous for unbiased new sites to remain that way. Everyone has a responsibility to keep that man out of office.

          • Lucifer says:

Matt, you look plain silly trying to pretend you guys don’t specifically highlight the late night shows when they talk about politics or social issues from a far-left viewpoint. We all know you’d never highlight anyone talking about Hillary’s alleged health issues which include her falling down in the street unconscious and hacking up golf ball-sized gobs of mucus on stage.

Katherine215, actually, it is a news site. It reports on anything to do with TV and is owned by a media news corporation. You are only excusing the bias because you agree with the narrative. You can’t live in an echo chamber your whole life.

          • Katherine215 says:

A political news site? No, it’s not. It’s entertainment, and they can report on whatever they want. And yeah, I happen to agree with it, because I”m not supporting a racist, narcissistic, homophobic monster to be the leader of the free world.
I’m sure the Nazis encouraged equal representation by the media too. Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean it’s credible. Sometimes, something (or someone) is so terrible, you have to stand up against bigotry and say, No, it does NOT deserve equal representation.

          • DL says:

Pretty laughable that someone defending the right should talk about echo chambers. Guess what: You’re not entitled to your own facts. Facts are simply facts. And the fact is that nearly 90% of what comes out of Trump’s mouth is completely false. And yes, that statistic is *gasp* factual.
Hillary Clinton and Democrats don’t want to repeal the 2nd Amendment, for example, but Republicans have been spreading that lie for years and people believe it.
Also according to Trump during his recent paid maternity leave speech, Clinton has no child care policy. Never mind that she actually has a comprehensive policy. We should just accept what Trump says and not call him on it. Because if we point him out for the liar he is, somehow we’re the sheep.
But by all means, keep telling yourself that. I hope the weather’s nice inside your conservative bubble. Maybe the rain will trickle down like your tax breaks for billionaires. :-)

          • Lucifer says:

Katherine215: Where did I say this was a “political news site”? You inserted that this was “TVLine is not a news journalism site” Which is 100% wrong. And like I’ve said, taking things out of context so it only makes one side or one person look bad is garbage.

DL: I don’t disagree with Trump lying, however, many of the “gotha” comedians like these will take things out of context. I don’t even support him, but it’s pretty obvious how everyone is continuously dogpiling on every single thing he does while completely ignoring things like Hillary falling down in the street and being dragged into a car all because she and her followers said anyone who brings it up is a “conspiracy theorist.” Meanwhile, a CNN reporter got cut off the air and fired when she brought up the fact that Clinton helped usher in the prison industrial complex (“super predators” ringing any bells?) despite her now claiming to fight against it.

Oh, and I’m not a conservative and would match more closely to a classical liberal. But I’m not concerned with labels as your average regressive is, be it good or bad. It must be nice to stay in your regressive safe space and label everyone who disagrees with your ideology with such a broad stroke.

          • meka3000 says:

Decimator are you kidding me? After obama released his birth certificate trump continued to deny it was real for 5 years. But he had no proof it was a forgery. Obama ended what trump started. Trump is just trying to spin this bs just like he spins all his bs.

Also rob if you don’t want your feelings hurt quit reading. No ones forcing you to read here.

        • Preacher Book says:

And very sadly the public has to rely on fake newspeople and comedy shows to inform us. This is also an exploration of a communications medium and everything that’s presented on it. Fair game for coverage and I will come back here pretty much everyday !!!

        • Mary says:

@Lucifer, maybe it wasn’t covered because it never happen. Talk about exaggeration.
If the far left upsets you so much why come here, Fox news is always available for your propaganda and lies. Have you notice Fox is Trump go to because Hannity and others worships him NEVER once points out his lies.

          • Lucifer says:

Oh, sorry, my bad. I guess the hundreds of videos from all different angles showing Hillary literally collapse and her body guards all circling around her, dragging her into the car was just a really elaborate doctoring or something. Same goes for the video of her at a rally and hacking up her lungs until she spits out a mucus ball the side of a golf ball into her glass. You people remind me of the comic sketch where the people holds up evidence of something happening and another person destroys it immediately, saying “what evidence.”

        • Mary says:

@Decimator your justifications are laughable at best. Trump has kept this story alive for years way after the birth certificate was produced. He was like a dog with a bone and guess what there was no meat on it. It is a requirement to show your tax return, NO, but funny every other President has even Clinton. You might not understand this but tax returns are very telling and Trump being afraid to show his, there must be a reason. If the situation was on the other foot and Clinton didn’t show her you all be screaming fowl.
If you don’t realize that an audit has nothing to do with him showing his return I have a bridge to sell you. It is obvious he has you hook, line and sinker but not all of us are so naive.

      • Why not address the hypocrisy here? Seth Meyers said “We decide when it ends.”

Who the hell put Seth Meyers in charge of how the American people deal with issues?

        • Lisa says:

‘We’ doesn’t have to be understood as every single citizen of the United States, ‘we’ can be any amount of people as long as it is more than one. Seth Meyers, and other Americans, are allowed to refuse to accept a subject as ‘closed’ solely because Donald Trump came back on all his lies by lying some more.

          • But he did “finish it.” Every talking head has been blabbing on about how everyone except Trump knew Barack Obama was born in America since he ran for Senate.

If Trump was the only holdout, and at the press conference he admitted that he was wrong, how is the situation not finished?

          • Mary says:

@Kevin because Trump still couldn’t own up to his lie, he turned around and once again blamed Clinton. They were pointing out the bold face lie so no Trump didn’t finish it they did. Also he never once admitted he was wrong – my gosh did you here him it is like a two year old and blamed it on once again someone else. This man never takes responsibility for anything he has said or done even when it has been proven a lie.

    • Joy says:

If I keep see these types of articles here, I’ll come here more often! :)

    • Mary says:

Why did you click on the article? The headlines made it obvious what it was about. Is it the fact that you can’t justify the known lie from your snowflake anymore. Did they make you start to see the truth about the TV personality who lies more than most.

    • Bella says:

Trump was on TV long enough to be relevant to TVLine. He’s a TV personality. As Meyers says, he was a gameshow host for years.

The fact that some people might actually want to elect a gameshow host to the presidency is a matter for them and their conscience.

    • Stan says:

I agree. I come here to read about TV entertainment news, not politics. It feels like a bait and switch. I hope this site doesn’t become politicized like its sister site, Deadline Hollywood. That place has gone to Hell in an echo chamber. I implore the editorial team to put a tighter reign on this soapboxing, because it will just get worse.

    • liame says:

Keep up the good reporting TVline.

  2. dman6015 says:

Donald J Trump – Liar-in-Chief. Tells more lies in one day than Clinton has in her lifetime.

    • Rob Horine says:

Then there is 100s of blogs you can take political talk to. Let’s leave TVLine to just TV entertainment.

      • Freddie says:

Commenting on a TV reality star’s run for the presidency should qualify as TV entertainment, no? Besides, who made you the arbiter of freedom of speech?

        • Rob Horine says:

Not trying to be a fascist, dude. We are at the start of a new TV season. And we are talking politics. Why can’t we complain about how bad the new shows are on this site and save the politics for other sites.

          • Mary says:

Did you not notice the first few articles in reference to the new shows. Go discuss there. I cannot comprehend why you click on the article when clearly you knew it was going to be political. Skip it like I do on everything that I am not interested in. I think one protest too much because Trumps BS is getting hard to overlook.

          • MMD says:

Well Rob, this was covering two tv ‘entertainment’ shows so I think that is TVLine’s job. If you don’t want to read about this then don’t click on the articles or go to a different site. After all, you have the right to choose.

    • Rob Horine says:

When did trump lie to four families saying their loved ones died because of a film maker and that he will make sure that film maker pays with his freedom and work?

When did trump tell his people to go onto the Sunday shows to say a terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11 was due to a film.

Please tell me when that happened.

      • Q2 says:

He lied on the day that ended in a y.
Can’t recall the exact day though.

      • meka3000 says:

Lying would be her intentionally knowing what she said was a lie. She just didnt know there was more to it at the time. Try interpreting things with nuance sometime, even though I know you hardcore fox news types have a hard time doing that.

  3. Nora says:

Samantha Bee also did a phenomenal segment on it on her show last night.

  4. Mara says:

To Rob Horine — no one is making you read this site. Go somewhere else if you don’t like it and stop telling the people that run this site what to do. It’s their site, they get to decide what they cover and how they cover it.

    • Katrinka says:

Exactly Mara! Unless, of course, someone is holding a gun to Rob Horine’s head, forcing him to read & comment on articles. I suspect that is not happening. Rob, please stop clicking on things that give you anxiety.

  5. MMD says:

Now this is the only way to watch the U.S. election.LOL How anyone can support Drumpf is beyond me. BTW, I liked Seth Meyer’s A Closer Look but Colbert came in a really close second.

What I find so hilarious is that people around the world know that Drumpf was lying and pushing the birther issue but yet his followers give him a pass. It will be interesting to see what happens election day.

  6. Z says:

These videos (with Samantha Bee’s) and then we had Jimmy Fallon rufflin’ Trump’s hair…

  7. Preacher Book says:

These are a couple of really pissed off comedians! The sad thing is our news people didn’t come out as strongly and the Republican Party “silently” condoned it. So much poison poured into our ears.

  8. pickles says:

These shows were not able to make fun of Obama so they need Trump to win because they can not make fun Of Clinton either. Late night never use to be this biased but that’s Hollywood.

    • Ron says:

We’ve also never had such a ridiculous, bigoted, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic clown of a reality tv show host this close to becoming president before either. It has nothing to do with late night being biased. It has everything to do with this particular joke of a candidate, not party affiliation.

    • Rob Horine says:

And that is why I miss Johnny Carson.

  9. Bella says:

It wasn’t Hillary or her campaign, but it was from people supporting her in the 2008 primary. Look it up. If the Trumpster can be held responsible for being supported by David KKK Duke, then turnabout is fair play. They are both horrible candidates, let’s be honest.

    • Mary says:

You miss the point. Trump kept it going for 5 years even after the birth certificate was produced, then he has the audacity to say it was Clinton, which in fact it wasn’t. None would have been my pick but between the two I will take Clinton over a clueless, bigot man who does nothing but promote hate and violence. I’m looking at the bigger picture which is SJ seat and no way I want a Man like Trump or his VP Pence to have a say. These man would set the US back 50+ years.

  10. Eric says:

I’m not even American and it terrifies me how many Trump supporters seem to be out there, even on this site. Some days, it bugs me to be Canadian: when a band announces concert dates, when I need something shipped across the border, etc. When it comes to politics, I thank my lucky stars. These are terrifying times, and the U.S. needs a strong leader, not a cartoon villain. Best of luck to all of you who are cognizant of this man’s brand of hatred and fear, and to those who think hosting The Apprentice is good enough training to lead one of the world’s greatest superpowers…well, remember you asked for it.

  11. Weezy says:

Lol. I love how controlled the media is. Hillary was the first one to EVER bring it up publicly when she was running against Obama in the ’08 election. But by all means let’s rewrite history yet again because it doesn’t fit into the narrative. One day all these sellouts are going to be pissed when they realize they were living in a fantasy world and not reality. If we weren’t well on the path to hell on Earth it would actually be hilarious. And if you did your own research you would understand just how unbelievably Twilight Zoneish the American mainstream media has become.

  12. JScout says:

Way to go Colbert and Meyers. My favorite late night hosts – after Samantha Bee.

  13. Gerald says:

Come on people. If you don’t want to read about night time talk show hosts don’t click on the article. It is that simple. I for one LOVE the entertainment of Seth and Stephen’s reporting on the politics

  14. JVC says:

Another article about how a “comedic” talk show host decimates, obliterates, demolishes, destroys, eviscerates, disembowels, or annihilates (i.e. smugly criticizes) a politician? This was lazy writing years before Jon Stewart left the Daily Show. Why is TV Line now running so many articles with this stupid click-baiting format?

  15. Katherine215 says:

I don’t watch the late night shows (too much other tv), so I’m happy to see recaps of these especially buzzy segments. Keep on posting tv news, TVLine.

  16. Angela says:

I love when Colbert gets into rant mode like this :D. That segment was fantastic.
(Also, to all those saying, ‘Yeab, but Clinton’s team came up with the birther thing first!”, okay, let’s pretend that’s actually true for a moment and she or someone in her campaign or whomever did do that. Even if that were the case, that doesn’t, for one second, excuse Trump running with and continuing to peddle that BS story everywhere for years afterward. He went so far as to demand Obama’s freaking birth certificate (which is especially hilarious given Trump’s refusal to reveal his tax returns). Any sane, intelligent person would hear someone spout something like that, go, “Okay, you’re an idiot” and call them out right then and there.
.But Trump never did that. He made it into this ridiculous farce, and I wouldn’t be even remotely surprised if he continued to secretly believe Obama wasn’t born here even now. The only reason he said that was because his campaign’s trying to attempt to “clean him up” after all the horrid things he’s said and done thus far this election. But it’s not going to work on anyone who’s actually paying attention.

  17. Pat says:

Really, got the biggest laugh out of both of these videos. Thank you, Matt & TV LINE!

  18. suzie says:

The irony is once CBS switches Colbert’s time slot with Corden, those two will be competing against each other.

  19. Quinn says:

Awesome! I love Colbert and Meyers even more for pointing out what a blowhard liar and bigot Trump is. Thanks TVLine from a veteran! You rock!

  20. dberky says:

Talk about delusional – These are comments from very Liberal Democrats whose opinions only matter top like company….for the sake of our country, get on the TRUMP TRAIN !!!
