Alison Briw GLOW Netflix

Alison Brie Lands Lead in GLOW, Netflix's 1980s-Set Wrestling Comedy

Community grad Alison Brie is jumping into the ring as the star of Netflix’s GLOW, from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan.

As reported in May, Netflix placed a 10-episode order for the scripted comedy series, which is inspired by the ’80s phenom of the same name (which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling).

Set in Los Angeles and showcasing “big hair and body slams,” GLOW is being dubbed a “fictionalized story of an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.” Per our sister site Deadline, Brie will star as said actress, Ruth, who is thrust into the glitter-and-spandex world of women’s wrestling.

In addition to her run as Community‘s Annie Edison, Brie’s previous TV credits include Mad Men and voice work on Bojack Horseman.

  1. Liz says:

Awesome. Always love to watch Alison in anything since Community is no longer on the air. Loved her as Annie. I miss it!

  2. A Fan of TV says:

I love Alison Brie and I love Jenji Kohan, both pretty consistently, but I don’t want to watch a period piece about pro wrestling for even half a minute.

    • Big Mike says:

      Then…..don’t watch it?

      • Brian says:

Also, seems funny that someone named ‘A Fan of TV’ has such a narrow-minded view of a show that has only begun casting. I would figure a true fan of tv would realize that shows about things people may be unfamiliar with can be fun to watch if done right. I know people who are anti-football in every way but gave Friday Night Lights a shot and loved it. A lot of people aren’t fans of fantasy but the success of Game of Thrones has been an exception.

  3. Wordsmith says:

This show sounds like such an ill-advised idea, but when you say Netflix, Jenji Kohan, and now Alison Brie, it almost seems like it might actually work…

  4. Simon Jester says:

Sounds kind of like an adaptation of the 1981 film ALL THE MARBLES. In which case… I’m in!

  5. Wooster182 says:

    I am so flipping excited.

  6. The Kaibosh says:

Alison Brie in big hair and spandex? Ding. Ding.

  7. Jason says:

You had me at Alison Brie in spandex.
