The Handmaid's Tale: Joseph Fiennes Joins Hulu Adaptation as Male Lead

Joseph Fiennes‘ latest role was handmaid for him.

The American Horror Story actor has been cast opposite Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s 10-episode adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, TVLine has learned. He will play the pivotal role of Commander Fred Waterford.

A founding father of the totalitarian society known as Gilead and a powerful, high-ranking official, Commander Waterford rules the household where Offred (Moss) is a Handmaid. (In the 1990 film adaptation, Robert Duvall played The Commander opposite Natasha Richardson’s Offred.)

The cast also includes Max Minghella (The Mindy Project), Ann Dowd (The Leftovers), Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black) and Madeline Brewer (Hemlock Grove).

Based on Margaret Atwood’s celebrated 1985 novel, Hulu’s Tale starts shooting this fall in Toronto ahead of a 2017 launch date. Reed Morano (Vinyl, Looking) will direct the first three episodes.

  1. Ian says:

I want to watch this for Samira, but Elizabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes??? I don’t care.

  2. Morgan says:

He’s a little younger than I would imagine for the Commander. Elisabeth Moss is going to nail Offred, though.

Haven’t we suffered enough with Flashforward?!

  4. So happy to learn someone is finally going to do a worthy (i.e. longer) adaptation that will no doubt include the small things then went unnoticed as women were disenfranchised. It’s a great books and deserves to come to the attention of a couple of generations it may have missed! Can’t wait!

  5. Linds says:

I remember the film very good.

  6. You know Madeline Brewer was also on Orange Is The New Black in the beginning! I’m happy to Samira back again doing something, so I will probably check it out because of her and maybe also Madeline Brewer, sense I liked her in OITNB and Hemlock Grove!
