Freeform Mermaid Pilot

Warrior Witches Fight for the U.S. Army in New Freeform Pilot

Modern-day witches trained at Fort Salem will lead U.S. military forces into battle in Motherland, a new pilot in development at Freeform.

From Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions and penned by Eliot Laurence (The Big Gay Sketch Show, TNT’s Claws pilot), Motherland is set in an alternate America where witches long ago ended their persecution by cutting a deal with the government, our sister site Deadline reports.

The project follows three young women who, per the arrangement, conscript at age 18 and train in combat magic at Fort Salem. With gender roles reversed, it is the witches who lead the battle against terrorist threats, wielding supernatural weapons.

Is it me or does this wackiness sound… promising, borderline cool? But can we ditch the Showtime-sounding title and just go with a straight-forward Fort Salem?

Man, that sounds FANTASTIC! (Unless it’s written poorly, of course.)

  2. Ian says:

Its a concept that could be very cool if executed well. Shadowhunters introduced the world to Matthew Daddario, so Freeform’s earned a bit of trust as far as im concerned.

    I’ll check this out.

It’s definitely a high-concept idea. All about the execution, though.

Sounds REALLY similar to Strike Attack Witches… And I’m not digging the gender dichotomy that seems to be in action here. Sounds backwards, limiting and stupido.

Sounds forward, expansive and inteligente (pardon my spelling if incorrect). I’ll give it a try. If the writing is good this could be some good action and storytelling (and hopefully with a few laughs …. as we all know………. humor, and not always appropriate humor, is a part of all high-stress situations, so it’ll need some of that too). i hope this show is well done. It’s a definite “try it” from me.

Are witches making another comeback on TV?

I remember another “high concept” idea from ABC Family, as it was known way back when- “The Middleman.” Gone after one season.

    Thanks for the laugh.

Sounds an awful lot like Richard Matheson’s classic story Witch War.

  11. RC Matheson says:

Extremely similar to Richard Matheson’s “Witch War”…
