Fall TV Preview

Luke Cage Trailer Teases Origin Story, Impervious Hero's One Weak Spot

Luke Cage may be bulletproof, but Harlem isn’t. And that liability is something he will need to take into consideration as he beats down baddie after baddie, as revealed in the trailer for Netflix’s latest Marvel series. The promo also allows a glimpse at the nascent, begrudging superhero’s origin story… somewhere amid the myriad airborne goons, that is!

Premiering Friday, Sept. 30 and starring Mike Colter, Luke Cage will detail the evolution of its titular toughie after he has relocated to Harlem and is in the process of picking up the pieces following his failed relationship with Jessica Jones. Having been endowed by a failed experiment with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke is pulled out of the shadows to fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

The cast also includes Mahershala Ali (as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes), Alfre Woodard (Mariah Dillard), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Theo Rossi (Shades), Frank Whaley (Rafael Scarfe) and Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple).

Next in queue at Netflix, after Luke Cage, will be Marvel’s Iron Fist, followed by the eight-episode Marvel’s The Defenders team-up event.

  1. I hope Marvel develops a Heroes for Hire series with Luke Cage and Iron Fist after The Defenders mini-series.

    • patrickmaloney33 says:

I’m hoping they make a Daughters of the Dragon series with Misty Knight and Colleen Knight.

    • quang says:

The Defenders is essentailly the Heroes for Hire series. Most of the Netflix 4 weren’t members of the Defenders, and they simply chose that name for the series because it was likely more marketable than “Heroes for Hire”.

      • sladewilson says:

Actually three of the four were Defenders at one time or another. Daredevil and Cage were on the same team as Dr. Strange, Hellstrom, Nighthawk and Valkrie for a while up against the Sons of the Serpent. Iron Fist joined later down the line for a spell. Great thing about the Defenders is you could come and go as needed.

The metal headband was a nice touch!

  4. Rahajicho says:

Getting a Wilson Fisk vibe off of Mariah Dillard, and I like it.

  5. diya says:

So Krysten Ritter will not be making an appearance as jessica jones then. I thought she would, at least in a guest starring capacity. Oh well….the trailer looks good though. Can’t wait to binge watch it.

    • S says:

I don’t know that we can necessarily conclude that. It looks like his exploits will (eventually) be well publicized. If he gets into major trouble, or asked for her help, I could see her showing up. It might be something they don’t want to spoil in a trailer.

  6. wylma says:

Damn, Colter looks more like a villain rather than a hero. They really should have gone with someone like Terry Crews… except a decade younger.

    • I have the same problem because I watched too much The Good Wife.

    • Jamie says:

Disagree! He has an edge because of the character’s background and his neighborhood, but he most definitely doesn’t come off as a villain. And someone smiley and giddy like Terry Crews would have never fit this role – all of the Netflix Marvel heroes are too dark and gritty for someone like Crews. Colter fits perfectly.

  7. Brian says:

    Looks great!

  8. sladewilson says:

Just as I’m hoping Shang Chi appears in Iron Fist along with Colleen, I’m also hoping that sooner than later Jessica and Luke re-hook up. I can’t wait for this show – Sept. 30th can’t get here fast enough.
