The A Word Sneak Peek: A Hopeful Moment With Joe Moves Alison to Tears

For the past three weeks, viewers of SundanceTV’s The A Word have fallen in love with five-year-old Joe Hughes, whose recent autism diagnosis continues to affect his already dysfunctional family.

Wednesday’s episode features a particularly “aww”-inspiring moment between Joe and his mother, and TVLine has an exclusive first look at the emotional scene.

A solid example of how the drama artfully tackles the everyday struggles of life with autism, this scene finds Alison and Joe flipping through a family photo album; she’s pleasantly surprised by her son’s ability to recognize the faces in the book — and even more overjoyed that he seems to be picking up on her own emotions.

A BBC import, The A Word stars former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston as Joe’s grandfather, Morven Christie (another Doctor Who alum) as Joe’s mother and Lee Ingleby (Luther) as Joe’s father, among others.
