SNL Vet (and U.S. Senator) Al Franken Gives Joke-Filled DNC Speech: Grade It!

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) didn’t shy away from science in his primetime speech at Night One of the Democratic National Convention.

“An 8-year-old kid can teach a 4-year-old kid how to use a microwave oven,” the former Saturday Night Live star declared as “scientific” fact, while kiddingly telling attendees they should “ignore” their families and their jobs to hit the campaign trail on behalf of Hillary Clinton.

But the bulk of Franken’s zingers were directed at Clinton’s Republican rival, Donald Trump — in particular his failed, for-profit education company, Trump University.

Below, a rundown of Franken’s most pointed zingers:

* “I’m Al Franken, Minnesotan, Senator, and world reknown expert on right-wing megalomaniacs: Rush Limbaugh. Bill O’Reilly. And now Donald Trump.”

* “Did you know that the Trump University School of Ripping People Off is ranked second in the nation — right behind Bernie Madoff University?”

* “[Trump University] is also about learning directly from ‘success experts’ like Scott Baio, Mike Tyson and, of course, a life-sized cutout of Mr. Trump himself.”

* Franken noted the Trump University Library is “located on a shelf in a closet on the third floor,” before finally turning serious, praising Clinton for being the “smartest” and “toughest” person he’s ever met, and then stressing the importance of every single ballot. Franken then noted his margin of victory the first time he ran for U.S. Senate: 312 votes.

  1. Rob Horine says:

politics not withstanding, I’ve never found Franken funny. Even when he was part of that ‘comedy’ team. Pat Sajak said those two were the only comedy team with “two straight men”.

Not to mention he’s the very epitome of liberalism. He’s egotistical and a morally superior jerk who rolls his eyes with anyone who stands up to his world view. In short, he’s a jerk.

  2. OZZZGRRRL says:

    I love Al Franken.
He’s a funny man who got serious when it was important.

  3. maggie says:

Hilarious and intelligent, Al Franken’s speech was great!

  4. Mr. Smith says:

From an independent: Concerning the joke about Trump’s hair, if this were turned around and Franken had been speaking about Obama, it would have been called “racism.”

A lot of contradiction in the democratic party.

    • Mary says:

Do you know what the difference would be? One can change their hair style one cannot change the color of their skin. I will say that jokes about Trump’s hair are getting old.

      • The jokes about his hair would stop if he would go to a barber who knows how to cut hair. I’m a hair stylist and “i know he is quite bald in most area of his head. 320 -+ million Americans know as well.

  5. The 2% must be Republican’s who did not understand the content.

  6. RachelC says:

“I’m here to tell you that an 8 year-old child…can use a microwave oven. And that an 8 year-old child…can teach a 4 year-old child to use a microwave oven.”

Loved it. He’s been so reticent to use his comedic chops as a politician, to prove that he’s serious enough to take on these issues, and this was the perfect moment to bring it all back and bring it together.

  7. Blondage says:

I would have enjoyed his speech if he would have read it in his SNL Stuart Smalley voice. :)
