Handmaid's Tail Minghella Dowd

Handmaid's Tale Casts Max Minghella and The Leftovers' Ann Dowd

Max Minghella and Ann Dowd have been added to the cast of Hulu’s 10-episode adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s bestseller, The Handmaid’s Tale, TVLine has learned.

Mindy Project alum Minghella (aka Danny’s kid brother, Richie) will play Nick Blaine, described by the streaming service as “a Guardian in Gilead, the totalitarian theocracy that has taken over America” and forced fertile women like heroine Offred (Elisabeth Moss) into sexual servitude in hopes of repopulating the planet. In his role as Commander Waterford’s driver, Nick will make “a connection with Offred, although she’s unsure whether he’s an Eye, working for the secret police.”

As for The Leftovers’ erstwhile Patti, Dowd will play Aunt Lydia, who “indoctrinates handmaids into the Gilead system… [training] them, by any means necessary, for their role as ritualized sexual servants in the homes of ‘Commanders,’ the elite of Gilead.”

The drama goes into production this fall and is expected to debut next year.

Now there’s an Emmy snub. Ann Dowd (and the rest of the Leftovers) were unbelievably good. I guess at least casting agents were paying attention.
