Nation, prepare for an injection of truthiness straight from the big guy himself: Stephen Colbert‘s The Colbert Report alter ego is poised to return for at least part of The Late Show‘s upcoming live political convention coverage.
Colbert himself hinted at the character’s renaissance during a Friday appearance on CBS This Morning. When host Charlie Rose questioned whether hosting CBS’ late-night show as himself was different from his previous gig sitting behind the Comedy Central desk as the “Stephen Colbert” character, Colbert responded, “Yeah, it is. It doesn’t mean he won’t show up.”
When pressed, Colbert coyly added, “He’s very needy, and he loves the limelight, maybe even more than I do.” He later joked that his blowhard doppelganger was hiding out with former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, who will join pal Colbert for Monday’s broadcast, kicking off a week of shows focused exclusively on the Republican National Convention. (The following week, Colbert will give the Democratic National Convention the same treatment.)
