John Oliver: In Gaining Independence, USA Lost Out on Accents, Meat Pies

Though there was no new Last Week Tonight last night this week, John Oliver took the time to make sure Americans keep things in check while celebrating Independence Day.

In the above online-only video, Oliver commends the USA on “kicking Britain unceremoniously out of this country” all those years ago, before listing the wonderfully British things we are now missing out on as a result — such as “beautiful vowel sounds” spilling out from our mouths, and the misleading appearance of meat pies.

What else — including fetch headwear — did Americans give up by way of the Revolution? Press play above to find out.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Can’t wait until July 24th when LWT returns.

  2. Leia says:

Really meat pies, we have meat pies, accents? We’ve got plenty of those too. Ya all. Havad, dees dem and doze, is this clown even popular?

  3. Cory says:

Uh what? Britain talked with what we consider American accents when the Revolutionary War happened and developed their modern accent later in response to America. I like this guy but this segment is too much of a reach.

  4. Maryann says:

The Brits of 1776 sounded a lot like today’s residents of southern Virginia. The posh British accent of today is only about a century old.

July 24th can’t come soon enough for me! Love John Oliver.
