Another Period Guest Stars

Joss Whedon, Cedric the Entertainer's Wacky Another Period Roles Revealed

It’s probably a good sign when a character’s name alone is funny enough to get a laugh: Joss Whedon‘s guest-starring role in Season 2 of Comedy Central’s Another Period is… Duane Reade, our sister site Deadline reports. Cedric the Entertainer will play composer Scott Joplin.

Another Period Guest StarsWhedon’s pharmacist will, since the series is set in the early 1900s, refuse to sell Riki Lindhome’s dim-witted Lillian a condom, the actress explained, “because she’s a woman, therefore a slut, and they’re illegal, which was real” back then.

The funny lady added that Cedric the Entertainer’s Scott Joplin is “like a Kanye version of Scott Joplin, where he talks, like, in the first and the third person… and we’re just always confused.”

Thus far, the show has not been able to secure the one guest that Lindhome and co-creator/co-star Natasha Leggero are determined to get: Vice Principals‘ Danny McBride. “Both seasons, we wrote him a role,” Lindhome said, “and both seasons, he was booked. We want him so bad.”

I’m not getting why the name, Duane Reade, is funny. Someone please explain. THX.

Because it’s a pharmacy. It could just be me that it cracks up, though.

It took me a minute to realize what the joke was too. Finally a little light went on that I’d actually been to Duane Reade when I was in NYC last. If not for this article, I wouldn’t have made the connection.

      • HAP says:

Although owned by Walgreen’s, Duane Reade stores are only in the New York City metro area. so the inside joke probably falls flat around most the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, I’m just excited to realize I accidentally got an inside joke!

Thanks for confirming that. I wasn’t quite sure if they were exclusive to the NY area, or if they were elsewhere on the east coast too.
