Hairspray Live: Meet the Newcomer Cast as Tracy Turnblad in NBC Musical

Newcomer Maddie Baillio will soon be singing “Good Morning Baltimore.”

The Today show on Tuesday announced that the up-and-coming singer/actress has been cast as Tracy Turnblad in NBC’s Hairspray Live!, following an open casting call in April.

Watch Baillio’s reaction to the good news:

Baillio joins an all-star ensemble including Harvey Fierstein (reprising his Tony-winning role as Edna Turnblad), Jennifer Hudson (as Motormouth Maybelle), Martin Short (as Wilbur Turnblad) and Derek Hough (as Corny Collins). Grease: Live‘s Alex Rudzinski is set to direct, while Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (The Wiz Live!) are on board as executive producers.

For those unfamiliar with Hairspray, it tells the story of a plus-sized teen who challenges the status quo of 1960s Baltimore by making her way onto a local TV dance show and standing up against racial inequality. NBC’s small-screen adaptation, which is based on John Waters’ 1988 film, follows a 2002 Broadway adaptation and a 2007 film remake starring Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta and Zac Efron.

Baillio will make her Hairspray Live! debut when the Peacock’s primetime musical airs on Wednesday, December 7.

Glad to see a newcomer fill the role! I’m sure she’ll be great! The other cast members seem quite capable as well! :D Looking forward to this rendition.

Newcomers are a tradition with the role of Tracy. :-) They did it with the movie as well.

    • LaDonna says:

Well, I think the likes of Fierstein (Tony winner for the same role), Hudson (Oscar winner), Short (noted funny-man), and Hough (Emmy winner – albeit for choreography) merits a bit more than a luke-warm “capable”. I’m thrilled to hear that Fierstein is back as Edna!

I wonder if she’ll have a better career than Nikki blonsky
