Corden vs. Anne Hathaway Rap Battle — Is This the Next Carpool Karaoke?

Despite what you might think after seeing George Clooney and Julia Roberts in the backseat of James Corden’s SUV, the Late Late Show host can’t just bring anyone along for Carpool Karaoke.

In an obvious attempt to create the next viral sensation, Corden challenged Anne Hathaway to a rap battle as part of a new segment called “Drop the Mic.” The hip-hop duel allowed the host to embrace his musical side without requiring his guest to have the repertoire of hits needed to partake in his orchestrated drive to work.

The segment at times was mean-spirited, which somewhat contradicts the otherwise positive energy Corden has brought to late-night television via his 12:37 am broadcast; after dissing Hathaway for her lackluster stint as Oscars host, the Devil Wears Prada actress took jabs at Corden’s weight and his inability to match Seth Meyers’ ratings.

Watch the rap battle above, then drop a comment: Does “Drop the Mic” have what it takes to become the next Carpool Karaoke?

  1. Zed says:

Already better than Lip Sync Battle.

  2. I don’t think they’ll have a lot of celebs wanting to do this. Most celebs have fragile egos. Some of those disses were pretty mean. It makes me like Anne Hathaway even more. She’s a strong woman.

  3. Lyle says:

No chance they freestyled, were there cue cards?

    • Dysturbed says:

Most likely they memorized their lines.

    • This segment was written by comedy writer Jensen Karp, formerly known as rapper Hot Karl and a comic by the name of Eliza Skinner. Jensen has a book coming out called Kanye West Owes Me $300 and owns an art gallery in LA. He’s got a few podcasts, but who doesn’t these days? #BEEFSEASON #WEHONGRY

  4. Kevin K says:

Anne Hathaway should give Anna Kendrick (Corden’s co-star in Into the Woods) a run for her money.

  5. snazzyo says:

Highly entertaining. James manages to get awesome performances out of guest stars. Anne has always been so much more than her characters. Glad to see she ‘brung it’.

  6. James says:

I don’t think it was mean. I’m sure its not like they didn’t talk about it before and afterwards… If they were okay with it, what’s mean about it? Stop being so sensitive, people. It was fun and cool for them to laugh about those things.

    • Temperance says:

Honestly, I thought it was a lot more about all the truly awful things that nutty, dreadful people have said about them in the press.
