Hairspray Live Cast

Hairspray Live Cast: Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein to Star in NBC Musical

NBC’s Hairspray Live! is finally taking shape — and what a glorious shape it is.

The network on Monday announced that Jennifer Hudson and Harvey Fierstein will lead the Dec. 7 musical as Motormouth Maybelle and Edna Turnblad, respectively.

For those tragically unfamiliar with the story of Hairspray, it follows a curvaceous young woman named Tracy Turnblad (yet to be cast) who uses her moves and moxie to challenge prejudices in 1960s Baltimore.

Fierstein first played the role of Tracy’s reclusive mother in the 2002 Broadway production; it was originated by the late Divine in John Waters’ 1988 film, and John Travolta assumed the part in the 2007 big-screen musical. Motormouth Maybelle, meanwhile, has been portrayed on the big screen by Ruth Brown (1988) and Queen Latifah (2007).

Additionally, Grease: Live director Alex Rudzinski has joined the event’s creative team, which already includes executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Do you approve of Hudson and Fierstein’s castings? Any suggestions for the rest of the characters? Drop all of your thoughts in a comment below.

Harvey is a great choice for Edna!

  2. Et al. says:

Very cool to have the Broadway original. Jhud is a great choice as well.

  3. DV says:

She was probably too young but I would have loved to see Danielle Brooks as motormouth maybelle. Jennifer Hudson seems kind of young too though.

  4. Chance says:

Harvey was great in the role on Broadway. It’s an excellent choice.

  5. Diana says:

Miss Paige Lundy auditioned this past weekend for the role of Tracy Turnblad… would be so amazing if she ws cast for the part. She ws born for that part and us Indiana folks would live to see her shine!

  6. tw says:

    Awesome so far.

So, now Rebel Wilson as Tracy Turnblad, Elizabeth Banks as Velma, and Melissa Benoist as Penny?

  7. Heather says:

I’d love to see Kristin Chenoweth as Velma.

  8. Diana Thomas says:

Hairspray is nothing without Harvey. I’m thrilled he has been cast

  9. Drew says:

Zac efron should most defiantly play link again. He was so amazing in the movie.

  10. ninergrl6 says:

Two thumbs up for these casting decisions. Really hoping that Ryann Redmond is in the running to play Tracy. She’s FABULOUS.

  11. Brad says:

    Chantelle Cognevich for Tracey!!!

  12. EthanWang says:

Ok, I am going to suggest some characters.

I think we need Rebel Wilson or Meagan Trainor as Tracy.

    NeYo can be Seaweed.

Beiber or Prince Royce as Link.

The three singing divas that sing welcome to the 60s needs to at least have Fantasia, Anika Noni Rose or Latoya London.

That’s all I got for now.

  13. Wanda says:

Chantelle Cognevich has that star quality needed to play Tracy Turnblad. She is a champion singer, actress and dancer. She gets my vote for sure!
