Game of Thrones Cast Reacts to That Stunning Melisandre Twist

Spoilers are coming! The following story contains extremely sensitive information about Sunday’s Game of Thrones‘ Season 6 premiere, so proceed at your own peril

At Game of Thrones‘ Hollywood premiere earlier this month, a hush fell over the packed crowd inside the TCL Chinese Theater when, in the episode’s closing minutes, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) removed her ruby choker and was revealed to be Sophia Petrillo a wizened old woman.

“There was silence,” recalls co-star Michael McElhatton, who was one of nearly four dozen cast members in attendance. “Everyone got really quiet and leaned forward. It was really eerie and creepy.”

Although most of the Game of Thrones ensemble knew the game-shattering twist was coming (having read about it in the script), the premiere was the first time they were actually seeing the moment play out on screen.

In the following gallery, 10 of the HBO drama’s stars — including Maise Williams, Iwan Rheon and Sophie Turner — share with TVLine their immediate reactions to Melisandre’s shocking, awe-inspiring unmasking. Flip through the slides, and then post your own reaction to the transformation in the comments.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Sh*t…. Was she like that in the books. Anyone know?

    • Zach says:

It’s been a fan theory in the past, but this is all new territory for book readers.

      • Joey says:

So she’s Shiera Seastar now, or….

      • ABG says:

It’s been speculated that she was really old, and her necklace’s powers were used to save Mance Rayder in the books, but it was never actually shown.

        • Ian says:

Ahhh, ok. So since this is uncharted territory, they must be using the way Mance was saved in the books to bring Jon back in the show? Cool, if not totally surprising.
Melisandre’s no innocent, she got Shireen fried, so if she has to die or sacrifice her youth or whatever, so be it. That said, <3 Carice.

  2. So do these kids watch the nudity of Game of Thrones just because they r in Game of thrones!!!???

  3. George H. says:

Didn’t realize that was Carice in prothstetics. Thought they hired an old woman to get naked. Very well done by whomever done it.

    • Ian says:

You could tell it was her from the eyes. They made of point of it cinematically.

      • George H. says:

Well, thought they did a close up of her in make up for the eye shot so we could think it was her. Didn’t realize she was in full body prosthetics, lol.

  4. Data1001 says:

What’s the big deal? She’s a witch, and there have been many, many, many stories in other books, films, shows, etc., in which witches are shown to be very old yet show a young and beautiful visage to the world. I don’t understand why people are going, “Ooh, Ahh! Wow!” over this. It’s hardly anything new, nor unexpected.

    • militantgod says:

Exactly. This “Biggest Twist Ever” headlines it is getting is hilarious.

    • KCG19 says:

THANK YOU! I’m waiting for this awesome twist and then she takes her necklace off and she’s an old lady. So what? Hopefully we’re missing something and it’ll have all sorts of wonderfully awful consequences for the show but I’m just not seeing what the big deal is

  5. Laila says:

“SPOILERS ARE COMING” and then you put as the article pic an image of Melisandre in her true form.
It always seem to me that when dealing with spoilers stupidity is a must.

    • The Kaibosh says:

      oh well.

    • Walkie says:

How about you stay off of websites that have the potential to spoil the show for you? It’s kind of silly to be angry over it.

      • Laila says:

I have watched the episode, it’s that it doesn’t make sense. The entire spoiler is seeing it, so why write a disclaimer in bold to point out spoilers in the article if you are already spoiling it in the image? It’s common sense, really.

        • The Kaibosh says:

So you’re not wagging the fat finger out of a genuine sense of loss of actually having the plot spoiled for you but rather out of some over inflated sense of righteousness? OK.

    • Aimee says:

Spoiler warnings are for people who haven’t seen the show. If you haven’t see the show yet then you wouldn’t know who the old lady was. The picture is not a spoiler. The information contained in the article is.

      • militantgod says:

The headline says “Game of Thrones Cast Reacts to That Stunning Melisandre Twist” and included is the image. Old lady image….Melisandre twist? Old Lady = Melisandre, Really that doesn’t spoil it? The article’s headline should not have included the name and the image. They could get away with one, but two? Come on!

    • militantgod says:

I know, right. Just leave a normal image from in earlier episode up there. There was no need to include that image. TVLine, has surpassed EW for spoilers, and that’s saying something.

  6. L. says:

Holy freaking self-righteousness batman. Where is the PERSONAL RESPONSIBLITY that says, “I’m not going to go on a website I know posts recaps and spoilers right after an episode until I see it, so I don’t go psycho and blame someone else for my lack of self-control about things that have always happened but I am JUST NOW getting angry about.” ???

I’m not quite sure if you guys (well, people like ^^) have ever noticed… but, I am happy to educate you. :)
