Empire Video: Jussie Smollett Shows Us How Jamal 'Got His Gay Back'

Allow Empire‘s Jussie Smollett a moment to sigh before he gets the party started.

In the following exclusive video, the breakout star of Fox’s hip-hop soap opera gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his character Jamal’s new jam “Freedom.” He also takes the opportunity to note that the rest of the Lyon family needs an education on socially acceptable terminology (i.e. Jamal’s mother, Cookie, referencing Angela Bassett’s 1998 big-screen hit to discuss his sexual orientation).

“Freedom” has “more depth and substance than just a party song,” argues producer J.R. Rotem, referencing lyrics such as “can’t nobody tell me how to love.”

Can you feel the rush of what Smollett calls the the “George Michael-meets-Pharrell” vibe of Empire‘s latest jam?

Empire returns tonight at 9/8c on Fox.
