Conan O'Brien: Garry Shandling Helped Me Get Through 'Crazy, Effed-Up' Tonight Show Debacle (Video)

The late Garry Shandling “inspired an entire generation of comedians,” but for Conan O’Brien, he was also the man who saved him following his abrupt ejection from The Tonight Show.

On Thursday’s Conan, O’Brien eulogized Shandling by sharing a story about the time he spent with the comedian during a “romantic” trip to Hawaii just hours after giving up the keys to NBC’s flagship program. “He counseled me, he cheered me up, he told me jokes… he talked to me about how there are bigger things in the world and I was going to be fine,” the host said.

O’Brien also detailed the unforgettable Emmys moment he shared with Shandling in 2002. (As you’ll see, it involved Jennifer Aniston, a white horse and a Bonnie Tyler classic.)

    Very touching.

  2. Elf says:

Great tribute. Their friendship was ironic because Shandling had been offered Late Night after Letterman left and turned it down, leaving the door open for Conan to get the job. I can’t imagine for a moment that Shandling ever regretted it.

I doubt he did, because well I don’t think he would have been able to create the Larry Sanders show now would he?
