Sleeping Beauty Series Freeform

Sleeping Beauty Follow-Up Series After in Development at Freeform

Somebody wake up Princess Aurora — there’s television to be made!

Freeform is currently developing After, a drama series based on Rhiannon Thomas’ Sleeping Beauty follow-up novel A Wicked Thing, our sister site Deadline reports.

After imagines what the princess’ life would be like after waking up from her 100-year sleeping curse. She has her prince, but her family is dead and her kingdom has fallen into the wrong hands. In order to regain control of her birthright, she’ll need to transform from a timid princess to a powerful warrior.

Tom Lynch (The Secret World of Alex Mack) is co-writing the project with Adam Lash (Heroes Reborn) and Cori Uchida (Eye Candy). Lynch will also executive-produce alongside Robin Schwartz (Manhattan Love Story).

A version of the Sleeping Beauty story was last told on the small screen via ABC’s Once Upon a Time, which featured Sarah Bolger (Agent Carter) as the narcoleptic princess, Julian Morris (Pretty Little Liars) as Prince Phillip and Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood) as the wicked Maleficent.

  1. Erik says:

Can they even call her aurora? I thought that was a Disney name only. Kind of like the seven dwarfs.

  2. Yigd says:

    This sounds terrible

  3. Jennifer says:

Since it’s on Freeform, I’m assuming that this is live action, can you confirm?

  4. Just for once I’d like to see a show about the powerful warrior who has to become a princess/prince, learn to stop fighting and start rulling. There’s a lot of conflict and drama in that.

  5. David4 says:

Can they just bring Boneheads back?

  6. Ray says:

Oh my, what an awful pedigree of show runners and executives. Not one decent show amongst the lot.

  7. c-mo says:

This doesn’t sound the least bit appealing, just like the other drek they’re currently airing. And since its airing on FF, it will probably be closer to the Anne Rice version…

  8. Annie says:

Awesome!!! Sounds like it will be good. And freeform makes good dramatic programming

  9. comfywide says:

The novel is called “A Wicked Thing.” Not “After.”

  10. Sara Power says:

Yay!! I love these books. There are dragons (well the second book has dragons)!!!

  11. Ceylan says:

I love Sleeping Beauty and am really looking forward to a tv show, but I am really suspicious of what it will look like in freeform

  12. briwrotethis says:

Aurora was a sleeping beauty.. Not the sleeping beauty on once. There’s a line where Aurora mentions her mother having to deal with malificent as well. They’ve made Aurora like the sleeping beauty text by Perrault, where the sleeping beauty has a daughter, L’Aurore.. Perrault wrote the original.

  13. Sounds interesting
If made to same standard of ONCE UPON A TIME
