Stephan James Shots Fired

Shots Fired: Fox's Racially Charged Event Series Adds Selma Star

Fox’s upcoming ripped-from-the-headlines drama Shots Fired has found its male lead in Selma actor Stephan James, TVLine has learned.

Co-created by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball) and Reggie Rock Bythewood (Notorious), the project — which was ordered to series in December — stars Sanaa Lathan (Love & Basketball) as an expert investigator digging into a series of racially charged shootings in a small Tennessee town.

James will co-star as Preston, a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. Together, he and Lathan’s sleuth must navigate the media attention, public debate and social unrest that comes with such volatile cases, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts.

In addition to his work in Selma, James has appeared on Degrassi: The Next GenerationThe L.A. Complex and can currently be seen as Olympian Jesse Owens in the film Race.

Shots Fired is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2016. Your thoughts on James’ casting?

Stefan James is an excellent actor, he did Lewis well and would’ve made Owens proud. This is FOX, so I’ll hold my judgment for now…but it’s nice to see tv with largely black casts tackling present issues and not shying away out of fear of offended people not affected by this.
