Merrin Dungey Conviction

Alias Vet Merrin Dungey Joins ABC's Conviction Drama Pilot

Evil Francie is getting dragged into court!

Alias and Once Upon a Time vet Merrin Dungey has landed a supporting role in Conviction, ABC’s legal drama pilot starring Agent Carter‘s Hayley Atwell, TVLine has learned.

The potential series revolves around a young attorney (Atwell), who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. With her team, she examines cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.

Dungey will play Maxine, a former NYPD detective and the unit’s lead investigator, who finds her loyalty to the badge tested as she delves into her former colleagues’ cases.

The cast also includes Shawn Ashmore (The Following), Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead) and Manny Montana (Graceland).

Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper will executive-produce the pilot with co-creators Liz Friedman and Liz Friedlander. Friedman wrote the pilot, and Friedlander will direct.

Dungey — whose sister, Channing, was recently named ABC’s entertainment president — recently appeared on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Chasing Life.

Perks of your sister being the head of the network. I bet this will get ordered to series.

I was just thinking the same thing. She was on 2 of my fave shows: OUAT and Alias, and I never got why she was given these great parts…now I do.

      • O'yaya says:

you both sound really ignorant with those comment, she has a part in big little lies and recurs on brooklyn 99, what family member gave her those jobs?

        • Marina says:

She hasn’t been cast in ABC pilot in years (ever since Private Practice, I believe) but she gets cast in one weeks after her sister becomes the head of the network.
She got the other jobs on her own merit, but definitely not this one.

          • O'yaya says:

what do you mean definitely ?!?!?! you have undeniable proof we haven’t seen. Also do you know how long casting takes, for most actors between reading for the part (which she would have to do nepotism or not) then getting producers to look though all the other viable actors and then contract negotiations … it’s definitely been more than a week.

it would look different if she hasn’t been working for years and then suddenly got this role. BUT Merrin has been working constantly this last year. she has had recurring arcs on 3 show, did two movies and a guest spot. it’s more work than other actors cast in this pilot or others have done.

They look so alike. I thought it was Chunning Dungey at first glance.

  3. patricia says:

Channing Dungey didn’t start at ABC until 3 years after Alias premiered. If you’re going to claim nepotism get your facts right first

    • anon says:

Has she even officially started? But yeah, I guess she’s just that good if she was able to influence casting on a network that she didn’t even work for yet ;)

      • Marina says:

Yes, she has. She started the day Paul Lee was fired.

        • patricia says:

Yes,but she wasn’t at ABC when Merrin got the part on Alias or many of her great parts on other networks. They just happen to be talented women who came from the same gene pool.

          • Marina says:

I never said anything about Alias. I just said that she got this job because of her sister.

          • MLPR says:

Wow. I get that she wasn’t at ABC in 2001 (when Alias premiered), but let’s face it, isn’t it all about who you know in Hollywood? And she was a pretty big fish at that point for other production companies. A lot of siblings get their starts because of others in the business. Just sayin’.

Everyone is claiming nepotism as the reason she got cast in the pilot. But hello, people, her role is supporting! If she got a role in a pilot (which may not even get picked up, but probably will because look at that amazing cast), wouldn’t it be the lead character and not a supporting role?

Merrin was great on Once. I also liked her as Francie. The Supergirl writers terrible job at balancing Kara’s two jobs on Sipergirl has made me appreciate how jj abrams was able to do it with Sydney on Alias.
