Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio Wins Best Actor for The Revenant

The fifth time was indeed the charm for Leonardo DiCaprio.

At the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday, the Growing Pains alum picked up the best actor Oscar for his work in The Revenant, beating out fellow nominees Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).

The Revenant was a product of the tireless efforts of an unbelievable cast I got to work alongside,” he said in his acceptance speech. “First off, to my brother in this endeavor, Tom Hardy, your fierce talent on screen can only be surpassed by your friendship off screen. To [director] Alejandro Iñárritu… you have forged your way into history these past two years. What an unbelievable talent you are.”

It was DiCaprio’s first win after four consecutive losses. He previously went home empty-handed for 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, 2005’s The Aviator, 2007’s Blood Diamond and 2014’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

DiCaprio — who garnered rapturous reviews for his role as 19th century frontiersman Hugh Glass — entered Sunday’s ceremony the odds-on favorite to take home the best actor trophy, following awards-season triumphs at Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards.

  5. Meres says:

    Six nominations! Not 5!

    • TayMads says:

No it’s five. He has only been nominated for Best Actor five times. The sixth nomination comes from a producer credit on Wolf of Wall Street. I think that is what he is referencing.

As now retired WWE superstar Daniel Bryan would say – YES! YES! YES!

Saw The Revenant – loved the horror of man against nature and the stark beauty of the film and nature. Leo was fantastic and I’m not necessarily a Leo fan. He deserved it as the Director did! Great film
