One Day At A Time Reboot

One Day at a Time: Justina Machado Starring in Netflix Reboot

Here’s a sentence you probably weren’t expecting to read today: Meet the new Bonnie Franklin!

Netflix’s Latino reboot of the classic sitcom One Day at a Time has tapped Justina Machado (ER, Private Practice) to star as single-mom Penelope, a 2016 version of Franklin’s character from the original series, our sister site Deadline reports.

Penelope is described as a “recently separated former military mom” who is struggling to raise her outspoken daughter and “socially adept” son while also running a doctor’s office. Penelope gets some “help” from her Cuban-born mother (Jane the Virgin‘s Rita Moreno) and her very friendly building manager, Schneider.

While I’m not a fan of all of these reboots in general, I am a fan of Justina from her role on Six Feet Under. Glad to see her again!

  2. Guilherme says:

*Justina Machado (Six Feet Under, ER, Private Practice), by the way, love her in SFU.

  3. HAP says:

I was just thinking that Bonnie Franklin was 31 years old when she began her run in the original. Justina is already 43. How old are the kids going to be?

    • Mimi says:

I don’t really understand your question/comment. The kids could be anywhere from 20 or so years old to 1 month. What does the fact that Justina Machado’s 43 have to do with it? If anything, Bonnie Franklin was too young to be Julie and Barbara’s mother.

    • NJMark says:

Characters are not necessarily the same age as the actors playing them. John Amos was only 8 years older than his TV son, Jimmie Walker.

  4. dragons3 says:

Could be interesting. If Rita Moreno’s in it I’ll give it a try, and I’ve always liked Justina Machado.
