Grease Live Summer Nights

Grease: Live Kicks Off With 'Summer Nights' — Grade the First Big Number

As the lyrics to “Summer Nights” suggest, the first big group number from Grease: Live felt like it happened so fast — and, yes, we had us a blast.

Stars Aaron Tveit and Julianne Hough, backed by their inquisitive castmates, crooned Danny and Sandy’s classic tale of awkward romance: Boy meets girl on vacation, girl ends up going to the same school, boy freaks out. (For the record, this whole ‘Surprise! We go to the same school!’ concept would never happen in our post-Facebook society.)

Aside from Jessie J’s opening performance of “Grease Is the Word,” this was the audience’s first real chance to experience Tveit, Hough and the rest of the cast — and we need to get your thoughts. (Your honest thoughts.)

Were you ready to make a true-love vow to the cast after seeing “Summer Nights,” or is that where things turned colder and ended for you? Grade the performance below, then drop a comment with your full review.

Video of the performance will be added when it becomes available.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Good to see Marco from so You Thunk You Can Dance! Hope to spy more alums!

  4. DFM says:

JH is a better dancer than singer. Her voice sounded thin to me compared to AT. He sounds amazing!

  5. wrstlgirl says:

Recording so I can ff through most of Hough. I’m only here for Tveit.

  6. joe says:

There is too much live everything that it’s distracting…the fans screaming is the worse! Was there really this much dialogue in either the stage or film version?

  7. Sandy Duncan's Eye on Network TV says:

This is dismal….the casting is horrible. This is coming off more like a high school production…if the leads got sick and were replaced by the understudies at the last minute.

  8. Cora Marasigan says:

Wish Zac Efron is the main character. Better stage presence and easy on the eyes too

  9. Susan says:

What happened to hopelessly devoted to you?

  10. KC says:

Hough can’t sing or act – she is ruining the whole thing.

  11. Tom says:

After watching the original grease a half dozen times with the wife its kind of fun to see a little different production and a refreshing cast do an updated version.

  12. katesutton90 says:

I am enjoying this. much better then the wiz and peter pan. My only complaint is that I don’t think there are enough microphones in the stage. The singers voices are overwhelmed by the instruments and live crowd.

  13. Phun says:

Julianne and Aaron are doing a great job!

  14. Debb says:

Everyone perfection but Aaron. He is talented no doubt, but he is no Danny Zuko. Needed someone with swagger and he is vanilla. That said, the camera work, costumes, Boyz2men, hough and hudgens wow!!!

  15. Merry says:

    Love it!

  16. This was AWFUL!!! This should was horribly produced, totally miscast with Sandy and Danny they look like parents of soccer kids. I hate to be negative on this “live” event and yes I did say HATE. Some of the songs were never in the first one. They stuck to original broadway score. Whose stupid idea was that? The original movie had meaning. This whatever it is, just sucks. The only exceptions were Keke and Carly. the rest was awful casting! I can’t wait till they destroy The Rocky Horror Picture show is next, Starring Laverne Cox for fux sake!

  17. Kim R says:

Fantastic job!!!! Everyone was great. So enjoyable.

  18. Linda says:

For those of you complaining, you can change the channel and watch something else. Right?

  19. Timmah says:

The production is great. The cast, not so much.
