Toast Pilot Foley Grunberg

Pilot News: ABC Orders Shondaland's Toast Comedy, Reverse Will & Grace

ABC’s latest crop of pilot orders include a wedding-themed comedy from Shonda Rhimes’ production house and a gender-swapping spin on Will & Grace.

Shondaland’s Toast, which has Scandal‘s Scott Foley and Alias alum Greg Grunberg as writer/executive producers, follows a wedding rehearsal dinner where the toasts made by an eclectic assortment of friends and family are illustrated by far-more-truthful flashbacks.

The other, untitled comedy project, from Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project) and Hannah Mackay (White Van Man), revolves around an unapologetic lesbian and her best friend, a neurotic straight male, as they navigate their dysfunctional, co-dependent friendship and the world of dating.

ABC’s other comedy pilot orders are The Fluffy Shop, starring Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias as a stepfather who navigates his home life during the few days he spends off the road each week, and Hail Mary, based on the Austrian series Braunschlag.

  1. Lauren says:

Just how far can you take a show when the premise is a toast at a wedding? Or better question, how far should you take it?

    • Wordsmith says:

HIMYM took the premise of a dad sitting his kids down to tell them a story and stretched it out for almost a decade. Those kids spent most of their teenage years on that couch, yet that wasn’t the part of the series that bothered people.

      • What are you talking about? How is roughly 20 minutes a week, 22 weeks a year where they were told a story “most of their teenage years?”

        • tsevca says:

Take a scene and describe her in detail. Time it, it will be longer than the actual scene. Ted didn´t show them those episodes. But it´s not how it really happened. He told them, so they would understood his decision to date another woman. He didn´t spend years telling it.

    • Stacy says:

Start at the wedding rehearsal, then do the wedding reception, an episode for each toast, and do a new wedding each season. Crazier pilots have been picked up.

    • Pati says:

my thoughts exactly, Did they think about it past the first few episodes. All these shows sound pretty terrible.

  2. Padraig Tipton says:

Don’t you mean Felicity’s Scott Foley AND Greg Grunberg?

  3. Wordsmith says:

    A ‘Reverse Will&Grace’ sounds like something dirty…

  4. Eli says:

So that ‘reverse Will & Grace’ is basically ‘One Big Happy’ which got cancelled after 6 eps.

  5. Spence says:

Toast sounds clever… For an indie movie. Doubtful that will work as a tv show.

  6. Boiler says:

Don’t cancel your current shows for these!!

  7. MiaB says:

“Unapologetic lesbian?” LOL. I’m putting that in my Twitter description.

  8. Ella Jasper says:

A comedy? How will she kill anyone off? I’d rather see Scott Foley on Scandal. I loved Greg Grunberg on Alias.

    • Wilma Flintstone says:

So you’ve never seen HIMYM…the show where they looked for someone for ten year and when they found her they killed her? Or maybe she’ll just start killing her staff. I can’t wait until her assistant writes a book called Shondaland…the scariest ride EVER.

  9. Wilma Flintstone says:

Shondaland’s comedy is already a dead end. Like the rest of her shows which run for a year or two and then repeat former story lines with the same, similar or completely different cast. Yawn!

  10. Sara says:

    They are both Felicity alums.

  11. Cooper says:

Just get non-acting SF OFF of Scandal. I wish him well in his new endeavors. The dude literally sucks as JB.
