Country Star Trisha Yearwood to Play Jesus' Mother Mary in Fox's The Passion

Do they serve grits and gravy in Galilee?

Country superstar and southern food expert Trisha Yearwood has landed the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in Fox’s The Passion, the network announced Friday.

Additionally, Latin pop star Prince Royce will play the disciple Peter in the two-hour musical event, which will air live from New Orleans on Palm Sunday, March 20, at 8/7c on Fox.

Yearwood and Royce join Tyler Perry, who was previously announced as the event’s host and narrator.

The Passion, written by Peter Barsocchini (High School Musical), focuses on the final hours of Jesus’ life, through a variety of popular music, and will unfold at some of New Orleans’ most iconic locations. It will include a procession of hundreds of people carrying a 20-foot, illuminated cross from outside the Superdome to the live stage at Woldenburg Park on the banks of the Mississippi River.

What do you think of Yearwood and Royce’s casting? Will you tune in to The Passion? Sound off below!

She can sure sing, but can she act? IDK.
Jesus Christ Superstar meets Passion of the Christ…in the Bayou? I have no idea what to expect of this, but I’m certainly curious, so I’ll probably tune in.

She’s a pretty good actress. She was on JAG and did a few other appearances. Her singing voice is also more pop than country, the twang in her voice when she speaks comes and goes pretty easy too. If you watch her show Trisha’s Country Kitchen, if she isn’t focusing on it, the twang fades.

  2. Annie says:

for the love of GOD (literally) there is no way the mother of Jesus was that white. Like it’s not even possible. This sounds terrible.

  3. Eric says:

She is a damn good singer she’s Beautiful and she can act just fine! Trisha will be amazing!
