Colbert Hails Obama's Storm of 'Gentle Reminders' About Gun Control (Video)

President Barack Obama’s call for greater gun control measures might prove unsuccessful, but Stephen Colbert believes it’s a step in the right direction.

On Wednesday’s Late Show, the CBS host praised the assistant lifeguard Commander in Chief for taking executive action to attempt to ensure that powerful weapons don’t wind up in the wrong hands, insisting that “the plan may not do anything, but at least the president is doing something.”

I refuse to watch a 3 minute commercial before a 2 minute video.

I worked at a gun store before in NY. A costumer wondered if he could buy a gun and bring it back home to TN. He couldn’t even though he was a TN state cop. I don’t understand why every state has different background checks, it’s completely insane to me. Make it all universal so crazy people can’t buy them and so it doesn’t matter what state you buy a gun in.

I wish you could visit a Tennessee gun show, David4, and see how business is done. No one may bring a live weapon inside, so armed deputies are there to make sure all the unloaded weapons are zip-tied so they will not fire. My question is, why is the NRA not present to prevent this travesty of our Second Amendment freedoms? Aren’t they the great arguers that we’d all be SOOO much safer if everybody were packing heat? Seems this would be the best place for open and concealed carry! Oddly, all the skinheads and fringe nut-jobs must have their guns disabled, yes, along with Tennessee State Cops. What screaming hypocrisy.

Doing background checks is not taking away from your second Amendment rights. The point was not all sellers do background checks, and he wants to enforce the laws that are there. Will this stop every incident no, but most of the mass shootings have been from a mentally unstable person. Do you really think they should be allowed to purchase or own a gun? I thought we were a more civilized advance Country packing heat as you say will just lead to more violence. Personally military weapons should not be able to be purchased in the first place. A weapon that can wipe out several people in one round should be banned.

          .
Agreed. There is absolutely no logical reason why anyone not in the military and not trained to handle one of those kinds of weapons needs to own them. Do they think they’re going to be in some big action movie-style scene anytime soon or something? I don’t get it.
          .
And I too am so sick to death of people complaining that common sense gun laws are somehow “taking away Second Amendment rights”. If someone’s already a responsible gun owner, nobody’s going to take their precious guns away. People need to settle down and use some logic. I hope the plans Obama has laid out, which sound very sensible and reasonable, can, at the very least, get us started on actually dealing with this issue, ’cause God knows we desperately need to.

You liberals need to start looking up the facts. Most of the cities with the highest levels of gun violence have some of the strictest gun control laws on the books. Chicago, for example. You take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens and all you do is create targets for criminals who are mostly obtaining their guns illegally.

        • Mary says:

tvjunkie: Not everyone who disagrees with you are liberals, but it doesn’t matter. Look at the mass shooting and sorry it wasn’t the criminals that were doing it, it is mentally unstable humans. Instead of hurling insults and saying why something won’t work, maybe you Rednecks could try to come up with a solution. Carry guns around is not the answer, because when people are strung out or drunk they don’t stop to think before reacting. Look at the incident that happen in Texas, a disagreement led to a death. It is obvious we will never see eye to eye. Have a good day.

I’m not even going to bother getting into the gun debate because there would be no point. No one here is going to change anyone else’s opinion.

However. I did just want to say that I enjoy reading everyone’s posts on the matter. Because from time to time you get a gem like this where someone says, “Instead of hurling insults…” which is followed up, *in the very same sentence*, with.. “… maybe you Rednecks could try…”.

Good stuff. Carry on. Or don’t. Whatever.

Stephen Colbert, nothing Obama has done is going to stop criminals.

Anybody remember when comedians were “hip” and went against the grain instead of being lap dogs for pols?

Nowadays, they all try to see who can do the best job parroting party dogma.
