Downton Abbey Cast Performs Scene With American Accents on Late Show — And It's Unsettling (Watch Video)

If any American broadcaster is contemplating a Stateside adaptation of Downton Abbey, you just stop that. Stop that right now.

On Wednesday’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert put the period piece to the ultimate test by inviting Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Allen Leech to perform a scene without their plummy native accents.

Needless to say, no one needs to hear from valley girl Mary or fashionista Tom ever again.

Watch the disturbing scene play out above, then attempt to forget all about it before Downton returns for its farewell season Sunday, Jan. 3.

    That was great!

  3. brandi says:

LOL! Is that what they think we sound and talk like? As if!
Hugh sounded like Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks in the original Annie.

    • Alichat says:

I imagine Colbert and team directed them on the type of accent, but it was rather fitting. If Mary were American, she’d probably be a spoiled valley girl. LOL! And Hugh did sound like Daddy Warbucks. Hysterical.

  4. Alichat says:

Oh. My. God. I love Allen Leech so much! That made me laugh so hard!

  5. Mr. Tran K says:

It was great having three Downton Abbey stars using American accents. I hope in the near future that one of the three should do it for an upcoming TV or movie project.

  6. Lukam says:

    ahhh that was fun :)
Allen Leech is REALLY cute! (and funny, great comedy timing)

  7. LOL….love DA and all the cast members!!!

  8. Ed says:

is the Valley Girl American accent the first one female Brits go for? Rebecca Lowe goes Valley Girl when she tries to go American, or is it the easiest one to take on?

on the flip side, the same could be said for Americans doing British accents…Americans never try Estuary or northern accents

  9. Ben says:

Oh my, I TOTALLY need to hear from valley girl Mary again…. and fashionista Tom.
