Are You Done With S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Ward? Was Hotel's Killer Reveal a Letdown? No Outlander Sex?! And More TV Qs

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Affair, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Empire and American Horror Story: Hotel!

1 | Master of None fans, can we agree that Saturday Night Live made a huge mistake letting go of Noel Wells? The Good Wife

2 | Wait just a second… after near misses with Finn, Johnny and Nestor Carbonell’s hot random business guy, is The Good Wife really going to pull the rug out from under Alicia and Jason without some kind of on-screen consummation? Also, as much as we’d follow Alan Cumming and Vanessa Williams into the ninth circle of hell, is anybody buying the Eli/Courtney chemistry?

3 | Is it too late to go back in time and teach The Walking Dead’s Sam how to play the quiet game? Also, do you think Morgan signed his own death warrant the second he slammed Carol to the ground?

4 | On Homeland, how is it possible that none of Qasim’s terrorist cronies saw him inject Quinn with that (presumed) Sarin antidote?

5 | How convinced were you that The Affair‘s Alison was going to lose her baby during birth — especially paired with Cole’s hallucination of Gabriel? And how would Cole have been able to escape the house fire he started? He kind of closed himself in there, no?

6 | Are we forgetting just how vile The Leftovers’ Patti was, or has Meg turned out to be an even scarier leader for the Guilty Remnant? And is it possible that Evie and her pals are being kept in Megan’s airstream against their will?

7 | Are we sure that Supergirl is the cousin who needs anger management?

Supergirl Superman

8 | Wouldn’t Crazy Ex-Girlfriend be twice as good if it was half as long? On a related note, with concurrent roles on Crazy Ex, Walking Dead and Flesh and Bone, is Tovah Feldshuh the hardest working woman on TV right now?

9 | Why don’t the other Voice coaches steal a page from Blake Shelton’s playbook by giving standing ovations, hoots and hollers and wildly over-the-top praise to their contestants — no matter how well or poorly they perform? (Look at the guy’s track record — his enthusiasm is contagious!)

10 | No sex scenes in the Outlander trailer?! Did we watch the correct video?

11 | Every Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewer is now 100-percent done, finished, finito with the Simmons-torturing, Fitz-taunting Grant Ward, yes?

12 | Is iZombie‘s Liv-on-Stalker Brain the scariest thing the show has done?

The Grinder13 | Can The Grinder: New Orleans, starring an oft-shirtless Timothy Olyphant opposite a come-hither Arielle Kebbel, be a real thing on our TVs every week?

14 | We get why you’d have DMX guest-star on Fresh Off the Boat, but was the rapper all that famous in 1995? And why would he have agreed to drive Eddie in a top-down convertible after having him sign a nondisclosure agreement?

15 | Worse father: D.W. Moffett as Joe McCoy on Friday Night Lights or D.W. Moffett as Connor’s dad on Chicago Med?

16 | How does Arrow arrow-ring-hiddenseemingly overturn the decorative bowl of marbles during the skirmish with Vandal Savage and then not have Felicity find the hidden engagement ring? And why doesn’t Oliver just tell Felicity about his son but keep that secret from Samantha? (Turnabout is fair play and all…)

17 | Didn’t this week’s Supernatural prove how much story there is to mine from a Young Winchesters/hunters series?

18 | As pointed out by a number of TVLine readers, wouldn’t Empire‘s takeover twist have been even more “Oh, dayyyyyum!!”-worthy had it been Anika, and not Camilla, who’d secretly married Mimi and busted into the boardroom in vengeful triumph?

19 | Can Nashville‘s insufferable Maddie go visit Colt’s sister, Sage, wherever she is… and stay there for a while?

20 | Were any American Horror Story: Hotel viewers surprised that John turned out to be the Ten Commandments Killer? Anyone at all???

21 | Who wore it best?Arrow Smallville

22 | Yes, she killed in The Wiz Live!, but can we also get a little love for Mary J. Blige’s amazing rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” at Wednesday’s Rockefeller Center tree lighting?

23 | How irked do you think Brandy was that the only time she showed up in The Wiz Live! was in a commercial for her new BET series? And was turning the final 15 minutes over to local news NBC’s way of apologizing for all the weeks they offered The Slap or The Player as a meager lead-in?

24 | Isn’t it a little #TooSoon for NBC Nightly News to be using its coverage of the Paris attacks as a selling point in promos? Speaking of  developments that made us do a double-take: Did you ever think you’d see Good Morning America report on how to survive a mass shooting?

25 | Is it too early to declare this Merci chocolate ad the most annoying Christmas commercial of 2015? Because…

  1. John NYC says:

11 | Every Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewer is now 100-percent done, finished, finito with the Simmons-torturing, Fitz-taunting Grant Ward, yes?

No, not even a little bit. Done is when he’s shot in the face (as should have been done that first time, silly Daisy), the sooner the better as well, IMHO.

    • John NYC says:

      Oh and?
“6 | How does Arrow arrow-ring-hiddenseemingly overturn the decorative bowl of marbles during the skirmish with Vandal Savage and then not have Felicity find the hidden engagement ring? ”

You just know that’s coming, she hadn’t cleaned up the place yet…

    • Mary says:

That or that creature that Hydra wants to bring back (as if they could control the damn thing and not also be its victims) get a hold of him and mess with his mind more. Seems like the better option, really than giving him a quick death.

    • Ben says:

The question is really asking… don’t we all want that to happen now. This week. I do. The Ward plot has been captivating and that episode was awesome, but it will all be a let down if it doesn’t end with Ward’s death soon.

    • partisan says:

Done, done, done!! So very, very done!

    • Rob TO says:

NOT ME. Ward is the most interesting character on Agents of SHIELD for me. I hate that he was written to do what he did because I feel like now there is no way they won’t kill him next episode.

Ward kills Coulson and brings back the powerful inhuman. Then the rest of the team have to find a way make SHIELD move on without Coulson and build up everyone else’s characters.

      • Tom says:

No killing Coulson. Nice going, troll

        • Rob TO says:

Thanks for receiving my opinion with respect guys.

I really think the death of Coulson can be done with huge consequences and bring viewers back to the show. The rest of the characters can find a purpose and every character can be strengthened by his death. Besides, AoS already seems to be very loosely connected to the MCU (the movies still haven’t acknowledged Coulson being alive) so why not just kill and work toward building up these characters and maybe one day tieing them into the movies?

P.S. You guys are calling Brett Dalton a poor actor, but is Clark Gregg really much better? He comes off as being very forced with his comedy at times and his reaction to seeing Kree body in the season 1 midseason finale is still a laughable acting meme for me.

***Awaiting troll and personal attack comments***

          • partisan says:

I respect your opinion…you’re just wrong.

          • Nosysite says:

You’re wrong and alone in your Coulson deathwish. Clark Gregg is a wonderful actor with great comedic timing. And the movies haven’t acknowleged Coulson Lives because JOSS WHEDON PERSONALLY DIDNT WANT THAT. Now Joss has gone on vacation that restriction is gone. And Kevin Feige sees it as the same universe and Kevin Feige is all that matters.

      • Ronald says:

Coulson is the show kill him no agents of SHEILD. Ward is boring kill him off so you can watch him on a soap opera and get your jollies

      • Hipper says:

Ward WAS interesting after the mole reveal until his actions and objectives became repetitive and dull.

He hasn’t really done anything worth wild since the beginning of season two.

        • partisan says:

How many times do we need to watch his smug, smirking villain act. Nothing against Brett, he plays what they give him but the contortions the powers that be have gone through to keep him on the show are just getting tedious.

        • Um, no. says:

          I think you mean “worthwhile”.

  2. July Lark says:

Ok, no Outlander sex, but we got to see Jamie and Claire, at least, happy, probably the only scenes of that in season 2.

    • Jim Hanson says:

Sorry this show was a bust from day one, woman is with her husband gets transported back in history and then finds new love? Then you have soft core porn for the rest of the season…Game of Thrones you are not!

      • The Carpooler says:

Don’t apologize and then troll. Just don’t troll. Your opinion of the show is yours. Don’t subject us to it.

Crap, I just fed the troll.

  3. Marie says:

I am Never Done with Grant Ward!! He is my favorite character on Agents of Shield. He is the only reason why I tune in each and every week. If they kill him off, then I am threw with the show.

    • John NYC says:

Oh sure, from out here he’s entertainingly evil (like that assistant on Smash). But from within the show he really does need to be buried, deep and permanently.

      • Mary says:

More like was entertainingly evil. He’s not a good villain/foe for Shield. And Malick is a bit of a disappointment really.

        • John NYC says:

I’ll grant the point of past tense. Dark can go over a line and, yes, torturing Simmons, offscreen or not and delegating it or not, is way over the line I’ll agree.

          • Bree says:

crappy writing. He’d never have done that if they’d kept him in character. Clearly he snapped after May set him up to kill his own girlfriend

    • Big Mike says:

The same way you were ‘threw’ with English class in high school, am I right?

    • partisan says:

Threw? As in thrown, tossed, the past tense of throw?

  4. t.w.123 says:

So ready for them to kill off Grant Ward! I’m hoping Tuesday is my lucky day…

  5. Bwhit says:

    11) I was done the first time he caused Fitz and Simmons harm. Then really really done when he tortured Bobbi. I love Brett Dalton but Ward is dead to me! Who else cringed when Coulson swan dived into that portal given the fact it closed not a second later? Good thing Hunter didn’t follow him.

    15) D.W. Moffett as Rhoades’s dad makes Joe McCoy look like father of the year… Joe truly loved JD, he was just an overzealous stage dad. On the other hand, his portrayal of Conor’s dad made it seem like he truly loathed everything about his son.

    • Mm says:

Huge, huge cringe with the portal dive. I think skydiving the portal is the new jumping the shark.

There are many things I love about the show; that crapfest episode and cheeseball moment was not one.

  6. Laura says:

    Lmao at 21

  7. Steven says:

    8. I disagree. I loved that Crazy Ex is an hour long. I wish it were longer sometimes because it goes by so quickly.

    15. Or DW Moffett on Switched at Birth. This guy is the go to to play horrible dads.

  8. isee says:

    7. Damn it now I want Cavill and Benoist to have a Super scene together. Thanks TVline :p

    21. I gotta say, Smallville really nailed the Green Arrow/Hawkman relationship. Sadly the Arrow/Flash versions barely had any interactions, and nothing near rivalry status. Here’s hoping.

    • isee says:

I’ll even add my own question: Is it just me or was everyone, especially Oliver, way too trusting of Hawkman and his story because the story needed it to? I mean, Oliver is supposed to be the suspicious, question everything one, no?

  9. tsukikomew says:

Marc Guggenheim confirmed the ring is not in the bowl of marbles anymore. He said it was just a convenient location since the script actually called for Oliver to hide it in a book.

    • John NYC says:

That WAS a little too in plain sight so an offscreen relocation is sensible, though when that sort of adjustment of a focused on detail like that is done some sort of onscreen acknowledgement seems in order.

  10. Gern Blanston says:

    14. Nope. He was still about three years away from blowing up. I still remember when I was in high school and It’s Dark and Hell is Hot came out. You couldn’t get away from it, not that you’d want to. Man, that’s a great album.

  11. Jada says:

I wish the AOS fandom was done with Ward. I sure am, he needs to die. Sadly the Ward fans act like he’s a victim and think everyone is so mean to him.

    • Na says:

Agreed. I don’t know how anyone can continue to root for his character. He is vile, there is no redemption. At this point they only way he could earn even a little redemption would be for him to sacrifice himself for his old team and quite frankly even if he did I would probably still only be relieved he was finally gone.

    • Big Mike says:

Season 2, Ward was the best character on the show. Complex, 3 dimensional, many shades of gray to his actions/reasons. They threw it all away this season for a stereotypical, mustache twirling villain, hell bent on revenge. It’s sad what they did to Ward, because his character WAS so awesome.

      • Maryann says:

I absolutely agree. For a long time last season, I kept hoping for Ward’s redemption. There were reasons he was the way he was, and I kept hoping he would find loyalty to his old team and that he had a deep agenda there and was just pretending to be all in for Hydra. Those hopeful shades of gray made the character interesting. Even with what he did to Fitz and Simmons, the argument could be made that it was to give them a chance as opposed to certain death. But now? I don’t think there is any way he can come back from what he has done. He was interesting when there was hope for his redemption. I am really sorry the show did not take that route and bring him back, but now that ship has sailed. The character is ruined, and as a two-dimensional villain, I just want him gone. It’s too much f a reminder of how much better the show COULD have been if they had shown him a path back.

      • Bree says:

        Completely agreed.

        it makes me so sad

  12. Mr. Tran K says:

Number 1 – I think SNL did the right thing to let go of Noel Wells because of a crowded cast the show had back in Season 39. Number 4 – Quinn should survive whether the Sarin antidote is working (fingers crossed).

  13. Mak says:

    12. That episode of izombie annoyed me the most…that stalker brain was just off

    • Jeri says:

iVombie is so good!! I don’t like all the “brain personas”: but when they are dine well it really makes the show. Love Liv, not sure who I want her love interest to be yet. I don’t think they have a worthy match yet.

  14. Tabitha says:

    25. You didn’t have to say it, but you did, but you did, and I thank you, TVLine.

  15. VJ says:

11.) Absolutely done since, well… at least last season finale. I wanted Hunter to kill him earlier this season. I think his story is done, done, done! We need a new villain, as much as I like the actor.

  16. Kate says:

    8. Yes, probably, this past week for example, I laughed so much in the first half hour that it was noticeable I didn’t actually laugh once in the second half and was a little worn out by the time they reached what seems in retrospect to be a funny song and also just an okay in case we don’t come back.

11, I have a suspicion that he didn’t actually do anything to Simmons. He is quite serious that he never means them any harm. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if he happened to have some extra fingers or whatever laying around that he got her to scream about thinking they were Fitz’s.

    16. I must confess, the ring was my first thought too (and that it might appear during their clean up) that the omission lie sort of snuck up on me. Then, as she is still around next week, I don’t know that Donna actually left Star City yet and might suspect she found it and did Oliver a favor and hid it better for him. Like, he might find it in cooking supplies that Felicity wouldn’t know the name of. I also think he will tell Felicity next week, just because how at risk she became might kick him to do something (that is unless, of all people, Alex discovers it first, just keeping tabs on his candidate). The only thing that makes me hesitate about him telling her now, is well, and I know this wasn’t a consideration, but I don’t believe that apartment isn’t bugged. By Malcolm at the very least.

    20. No, I wasn’t surprised. I was, however, surprised that there was more to the Countess’ abduction of Holden. That will be interesting when John and Alex meet up and John might put some pieces together.

    21. Sorry Justin Hartley, but Stephen wears it better. But then there is the continued problem with Carter and what he looks like, or at least his ethnicity. I thought they might have taken note of it this time around and just have Carter be different than his original incarnation and Kendra just happens to look exactly the same this time around. You might also let the current Hawkman use his real German accent so that might be an explanation for why it took longer to find each other this time around (since someone did the math and they apparently averaged out at age 19, and clearly they are both older than that now, since the younger Flash cast is supposed to be 27 at minimum and the Arrow team, well, except for Felicity and Thea, are all in their thirties or older and neither Kendra nor Carter looked any younger than the Arrow cast).

    • John NYC says:

      11) Had it been faked he’d not have needed to bring in the telekinetic torturer though. So I think she was physically tortured.

  17. Laura says:

11: I’m so torn on Ward. I hate him. I’m so mad at him for everything he’s done, especially to FitzSimmons, and he’s such a terrible person. Yet I really don’t want him to die because he’s such a good character. I’m not done with him, but I sure as heck don’t have an ounce of sympathy for him either.

    • Tenney says:

That’s really how I feel about Ward also. I definitely do not have any sympathy for him and I think he is a good character, but his evil intentions need to move beyond the AOS team. That is what is getting old for me about Ward.

    • Winter says:

I completely agree. At some point he has to die and I do not look forward to that day

  18. Gerri says:

2- No Thank you. He is a slimy character and I hope she doesn’t go there with him.
11 – He is a good bad guy. But I get the torturing one to get to the other is getting a little old. He still needs to die, just a matter of when.
16b – YES Tell her. Stupid to keep it from her.
17 – Love the flashbacks when they are done well, and this one was. Surprisingly emotional.
21 – Apples and Oranges – I loved them both. But Michael Shanks was pretty awesome.

  19. 20) John being the killer wasn’t “the twist,” since even Helen Keller could see it coming from a mile away. The twist was the fact that John had been visiting the hotel for five years and that all of its residents manipulated him into become a stone-cold killer.

  20. Reba42 says:

    #25. Truer words…

  21. I’m actually more into the character of Ward now that they’ve made a decision to take him one way or another (good or evil). It seemed he was a bit too on-the-fence the last few weeks. I’m all in for #EvilWard

    • Jerry West says:

Ward will not be killed by anyone at SHIELD. Ward is a creature searching for redemption, his feelings about his brother show that there is something redeemable in him. Ward may never return to SHIELD, but if he dies it will be to save those he has tortured.

  22. niloofar22 says:

4 | the sadistic writers of Homeland are enjoying themselves this season with Quinn. ENOUGH

  23. RichCD says:

    11. Yes, yes and YES! This show needs to move forward, like, now.
    16. The less said about this, the better.

  24. James PDX says:

Does anyone else think that Ward will be possessed by the ancient evil thereby making him immortal/invulnerable?

    • Sarah says:

Maybe but to me they will be going to a different route and Coulson or Fitz are coming out possessed and Ward dies in there…i think they already did everything with his character and there’s still the mysterious Will out on the planet and I don’t really trust him.

  25. bill says:

More Ward! Evil Ward is one of the best parts of AoS.

  26. Dj says:

In every show where there is a recurring villain there comes a point where its time for the hero to put a bullet in his head. Ward has reached that point. My only fear is that next week instead of Coulson double tapping him he is going to make Ward surfer and leave him on that planet which means he would have a chance to come back.

  27. Luis says:

    7. There are a LOT of unresolved abandonment issues in the El family.
    11. Is there a better villain on (broadcast) TV right now than Grant Ward? Utterly amoral, driven by guilt and seeking revenge for all the pain he’s suffered in his life. I loved Daisy’s description of Ward – “his problem is that he feels too much.” Brett Dalton is doing an amazing job this season selling the villainy of Ward.
    16. What will be a better reaction from Felicity: finding the engagement ring or finding out she’s a would-be stepmom?
    21. Much as I love Michael Shanks, I have to give it up for this version of Hawkman. Badass!

  28. Anna says:

2 – Nope, I totally don’t buy the Eli/Courtney chemistry. There just is none. I’d much rather see Eli with America Ferrera’s character again, they had amazing chemistry! But I guess that isn’t happening, seeing as she has her own new show now…

  29. Sheldon W. says:

    11. Before, even.
    16. Right?
    17. Not so much prove as dramatically hint…
    21. Amell, Shanks (ignoring the awful wings, Shanks’ Hawkman had the cooler costume.)
    25. It’s not early to call it the most annoying Christmas ad so far this year.

  30. KateFaulkner27 says:

-I LOVE Ward,l as a villan, but even I am cringing more and more about the torture stuff. Leave Fitzsimmons alone!
-Amell wore it better, and Shanks wore it better. They are both handsome to look at.
What, no mention of Damon and his mommy issues from TVD? Ouch. I cringed big time.

  31. lori says:

10…believe it or not, there is actually a very deep story to Outlander. It’s not all about sex.
11…yes, want Ward killed off now. Kept hoping they would redeem him somehow, but they can’t.

  32. JosiahBartlet4President says:

With mass shootings in our country becoming so frequent, and leadership in this country (all three bodies of government) being either willfully inert or stymied by lobbyist, why should we be surprised that GMA is offering us safety and survival tips?

  33. nabocane says:

I’ve been done with Ward since S01. He is a scenery-chewing, NOTHING presence onscreen and the laziest writing device since Lex Luthor. He’s a CW-stock pretty boy who subtracts air time from a big bad and a story arc that could actually be compelling.

  34. Done says:

Oh I have been done with Grant Ward for SO long now, I just want him gone already. It’s gotten to the point that when he’s on screen, me and my husband start rolling our eyes.

  35. Elibu says:

    5. As we’d seen the baby multiple times in the future–and Helen stole the pacifier for DNA–it never crossed my mind that Allison would lose the baby. A much better question would be how ridiculous was it for there to be a hurricane in New York in March?

  36. Mariah says:

Who Wore It Best? Justin Hartley and Michael Shanks!

  37. Erin B says:

#21 – Justin Hartley all day, every day

  38. CK2 says:

I’ve been done with Ward since at least last season. Let’s face it, he’s becoming AoS’s Sylar. I enjoy Brett Dalton’s performance, but I find the continued use and shoehorning of the character Ward to be pointless and detrimental to the plot.

    • CK2 says:

I do think that they should look into “Fred”ing Ward with the exiled Inhuman to keep around the actor. Just as long as they keep the mentions of the character, Ward, to a minimum.

  39. Carrie says:

#21- Justin Hartley and Michael Shanks, hands down.

  40. KatsMom says:

    #11 — Yes. Yes. 1,000 times yes!
#21 — Lol…Tough call if you have to keep them together. I like the look of Smallville’s GA and LoT’s Hawkman best.

  41. Phil says:

8 – I think Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is just fine as an hour. It lets the plots flow more naturally and give time to the supporting cast, and two songs an hour is great.
I know the original plan was half-hour, but that was tossed for good reason – part of that being that format probably made the plotlines too slight.

  42. mac says:

Ward is my favourite character, ain’t ever done with that guy. Best MCU villain ever

  43. Tom says:

11 | Every Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewer is now 100-percent done, finished, finito with the Simmons-torturing, Fitz-taunting Grant Ward, yes?
I’ve been done with him since he killed Victoria Hand and Eric Koenig. I can not understand why more people haven’t been calling for his head like I have SINCE FRAKING SEASON ONE!
24 | Isn’t it a little #TooSoon for NBC Nightly News to be using its coverage of the Paris attacks as a selling point in promos? Speaking of developments that made us do a double-take: Did you ever think you’d see Good Morning America report on how to survive a mass shooting?
I mean, this is what we get for not doing anything to stop them.

  44. cej says:

#25: Yes, it is an extremely annoying commercial. And thank you/merci, because now I can’t get that song out of my head!

  45. c-mo says:

    25. For me, it’s actually a tie between that one and the the Ferrero Rocher one.

  46. lariet50 says:

YES!! Death to Ward! It’s what I want for Christmas!

  47. Annie says:

18, If Empire wants to come back in March, and say that Anika is involved in the takeover, I will totally buy it. They don’t even have to provide an explanation.

  48. davido says:

DONE with Ward. Kill him already!

  49. 11 | Every Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewer is now 100-percent done, finished, finito with the Simmons-torturing, Fitz-taunting Grant Ward, yes?

they need to kill ward off as bloody & violently as the censors will allow….no scratch that they need contact disney & have them write a $10 million check to the fcc with a note that says “sorry in advance”
& then hire quentin tarantino to do a death scene that make himself queasy

  50. Jennifer says:

    21) Smallville for sure.
