Matt Bomer Amazon Pilot

Matt Bomer to Star in Amazon Pilot Tycoon Set in 1930s Hollywood

Less than a year after White Collar wrapped its six-season run, Matt Bomer is looking to headline his next TV series.

Bomer will star in the Amazon pilot Tycoon, based on the unfinished F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Last Tycoon, our sister site Deadline reports.

Bomer, who currently stars on FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel, will play 1930s movie mogul Monroe Stahr, a character inspired by Hollywood legend Irving Thalberg. The series, like the source novel, will follow Monroe’s rise as a studio executive, a journey which eventually puts him at odds with studio head Pat Brady — who also happens to be Monroe’s mentor. Brady is inspired by MGM co-founder Louis B. Mayer.

The pilot was written by Billy Ray (Captain Phillips), who will also direct.

I will watch anything this man is in. He’s so talented. I was so excited that he was joining American Horror Story this season, but to my disappointment his talents much like Angela Bassett and Sarah Paulson are absolutely being wasted this season. It’s so sad that he’s barely even in the show. I see people constantly complaining about how Lady Gaga is ruining this season, but she’s been fine and the least of the show’s issues this season. The biggest problem I find is how absolutely BORING the Wes Bentley/Chloe Sevigny’s characters are. It’s beyond frustrating how much screen time has been devoted to those two while so many of this talented cast are barely featured.

I’m excited to see Matt Bomer in 1930s style! This is going to be clothing porn at its finest!

Heck they could just about just wheel his White Collar wardrobe back out of storage lol. Seriously hope that means more hats – he always looked so cool.

If this means getting him away from Ryan Murphy and his crapfest American Horror Story, I’m all for it.

Matt is perfect for this type of role. I can’t wait to see him in a lead role again. I haven’t watched AHSHotel because even the previews made me squeamish. From what I read Matt isn’t in it much, although they tend to use lots of characters, like in Freak Show, and they all have different eps that they are prominent in. Anyway, Matt Bomer is a very talented actor and am glad he has a new opportunity to showcase that.

I’d rather see him in the Robert Redford role in a miniseries of Inside Daisy Clover, instead.

I’ll have to sign up for Amazon now! I am so happy to see Matt get a role with more class than AHS. I agree with Guy that it will be good for him to get away from Ryan Murphy. I have watched everything I could find him in since I discovered him in Traveler, but AHS has been a struggle. I sit through an awful lot of blood and gore to get a minute or 2 of Matt. Thanks for the info. This is really good news for us fans.

Yes, it is extremely frustrating that he does not have more screen time on AHS. That goes for Angela Bassett too. Not that Gaga isn’t doing a good job, but it doesn’t seem fair to not give more time to the veteran actors. I think he is going to be fabulous in this role. They made a great choice.

  8. Dave says:

Lots of ridic comments on here about AHS. Bomer is not leaving the Murphy universe, fyi. He will be a part of next season. And Hotel is stellar. Haters to the left…

Matt Bomer was brilliant in White Collar, he made his character seem genuine, he deserves everything, also his dazzling blue eyes are a gateway to stardom!!☺

This is going to be a very interesting show. Matt Bomer is a good actor. He’s perfect this role. He has charm similar to Leo DeCaprio

  12. Mike M says:

Fantastic news. All we need to hear now is that Jeffrey Donovan has been cast as Brady and it will be perfect. Seriously miss both White Collar & Burn Notice.
