Justin Bieber's American Music Awards Finale — Grade His Rain-Soaked Medley

ABC and T-Mobile promised that Justin Bieber would “shatter expectations” at Sunday’s American Music Awards, closing the show “in a way [we’ve] never seen before.” But did his performance live up to its hype?

Frankly, I’m not sure any of my expectations were shattered — it wasn’t unlike anything we’ve seen from the Biebs before — nor did I think he needed that “welcome back” message from Ciara before he took the stage. (Did he go anywhere?)

Still, it was a fun way to close the three-hour fete. Bieber kicked off his medley with a stripped-down rendition of “What Do You Mean,” standing on stage with but a guitarist and a sweatshirt, before launching into a more exciting performance of “Where Are Ü Now.”

Bieber wrapped things up with a bit of his smash hit “Sorry,” complete with a rain storm. (Now I know why he was wearing that hoodie; he didn’t want to get any of his good clothes wet.)

Your thoughts on Bieber’s big finish? Grade his performance below, then drop a comment with your full review.

Video from the AMAs will be added when available.

I thought he was great! Could you imagine remembering all those choreographed moves, literally every single move he made was planned, while singing and making the right facial expressions? Even though he lip synced, that’s still a lot to remember.

    • Max says:

Except he wasn’t singing. He was poorly mouthing at times and other times, not even caring. Yes, I’m sure people with real hard jobs will feel pity for a multimillionaire having to remember some dance steps. Life is really rough

  2. DdS says:

It was good until he lip synched the last song :(

  3. Robin says:

    Nice lip-sinking.

  4. kelvin says:

the performance was terrible, from the terrible vocals at the beginning to the noticeable lip syncing.

  5. yep he lip synched . He always says he never uses auto-tune. SO you gotta lip synch?

  6. Ang says:

To all the lip-sync haters, there’s that pesky little thing called electrocution…

  7. Thomas Pierce says:

For the sake of professionalism, at least TRY to hide the lip syncing… If you’re going to be the finale of a music award show, don’t make it painfully obvious you’re not singing, no matter how complex the choreography is.

Also I think he was the only one that lip synced, just hearing the others most were actually singing.

  8. Gary says:

What a low class idiot…he can’t even lip sync properly! Very, very sad.

  9. Rory says:

These “artists” today are soooooooo bad!!!!! Beeber Boy is trailer trash.

  10. Nisha says:

he was clearly lip syncing Sorry…

  11. Matteo says:

Why bother with all the gimmicks if you’re not singing live and make a mockery of lip synching on a music award shy e:

That hoodie, is a brand called Off-White and retails for close to a thousand dollars. Im so sick of people who know nothing about fashion commenting on what celebrities are wearing. He didn’t lip sync the first 2 songs, and looked confused at the end of sorry when he tried to use his mic to say thank you. He probably didn’t even know his mic wasn’t working during the end of the performance. Regardless, he’s got talent and I thought he did great.

  13. Hege says:

I find it amusing that Bieber storms off stage in Norway after a fan spills a little water on the stage floor. Three weeks later he performs in the rain…. Go figure. LOL.

  14. Jeri says:

He is his biggest fan. He’d be ok if he didn’t expect to be worshipped. Tries way too hard.

  15. Valerie says:

It was said he had to lip-sync that last song because of all the water falling you would’ve just heard the water and not him.
Just what I heard, don’t kill the messenger……

  16. Arman says:

Why u don’t give us any msg
I’m waiting fr your voice live.

  17. ivan says:

Regarding the Lip Sync crap: try dancing and singing while water is being pored over you; aside from the fact there is no band on stage so you NEED playback. Justin did sing his first two songs live; most artists have lip synced at one time or another for various reasons even Whitney Houston at a baseball game. I think his performance was great; ask the people that were there.
