ABC and T-Mobile promised that Justin Bieber would “shatter expectations” at Sunday’s American Music Awards, closing the show “in a way [we’ve] never seen before.” But did his performance live up to its hype?
Frankly, I’m not sure any of my expectations were shattered — it wasn’t unlike anything we’ve seen from the Biebs before — nor did I think he needed that “welcome back” message from Ciara before he took the stage. (Did he go anywhere?)
Still, it was a fun way to close the three-hour fete. Bieber kicked off his medley with a stripped-down rendition of “What Do You Mean,” standing on stage with but a guitarist and a sweatshirt, before launching into a more exciting performance of “Where Are Ü Now.”
Bieber wrapped things up with a bit of his smash hit “Sorry,” complete with a rain storm. (Now I know why he was wearing that hoodie; he didn’t want to get any of his good clothes wet.)
