CMA Awards 2015: The Best (JT!) and Worst (Shatner!) Moments

It’s that time of year again, y’all!

The 49th Annual CMA Awards aired Wednesday night on ABC, once more bringing a bit of real-life Nashville to the Nashville network.

The telecast, broadcast live from Music City’s Bridgestone Arena, heaped its riches at the feet of artists both established (Little Big Town) and new (Chris Stapleton) while managing to work in some less-countrified guests — think Star Wars and Justin Timberlake — for those who don’t want their denim to get too dusty.

The gallery below holds our picks for the night’s best and worst moments, but we want to hear what you think, too. So click through the photos, then hit the comments with your thoughts on the night!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

    BEST:
Christ Stapleton with the hat trick
Chris Stapleton’s performance (with Justin Timberlake, nonetheless)
    Even LBT’s performance was solid

    WORST
    Sam Hunt’s performance
    Jason Aldean’s performance
    Zac Brown Band’s performance
Luke Bryan (performance and his award)

Overall, the award show showed a remarkable shift in the country music landscape. Chris Stapleton is the &$%^ing MAN!

Best: Everything related to Little Big Town and Chris Stapelton. Also, Kacey Musgraves- She’s the real deal.
Worst: On top of what you wrote – ABC missed EVERY possible opportunity to promote their show about country music that takes place IN Nashville on the show. Aubrey Peeples was wasted and so were Lennon and Maisy there were also there and that entire super-talented cast.

    • RandyK says:

They didn’t promote Nashville because they were busy shamelessly promoting Star Wars. Disney/ABC drives me nuts with this stuff.

I can’t be the only one who thought this show was pretty boring…. Can I? Why were 90% of the performances/songs ‘slow’? I felt like I was at a funeral for most of the show. I’m disappointed. Enjoyed the Star Wars opening as well as the monologue but…. I almost fell asleep through most everything else. And this is coming from a HUGE country music fan.

I am still in awe of Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake. Amazing performance. Now I want a country album from JT.

    • Cobra says:

The performance was amazing. But Timberlake is a pop singer. He did great in the performance, but we don’t need another pop star “going country” – at least until country music as a whole gets itself back on track.

Tonight, with Chris Stapleton’s multiple awards, was a good start, but radio needs to follow up now and play some Stapleton, and stop playing the Sam Hunt and Luke Bryan BS.

Best: Christ Stapleton and JT jamming! Little Big Town was right on. Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley’s with the College football mascots and ESPN’s lead in, Keith Urban and John Cougar Mellencamp, Reba and Brooks & Dunn, Carrie Fisher (Underwood) new song-BTW hubby is Nashville Predator Mike Fisher so this was one more gag for Brad during the Star War gag. Florida-Georgia Line was good too. I wish Garth Brooks got to sing. I am glad they didn’t work the Blake/Amanda breakup. We don’t need the drama… Elvria was good too! I love Brad and Carrie opening song too.

What?? You didn’t like Pentatonix doing the Oak Ridge Boys? They got a standing O!!

  8. Sarah T says:

BEST: JT & Chris (that should’ve closed the show, they were the best of the night by far)
Brooks & Dunn & Reba. I’m not a huge Reba fan but the whole set was solid. Eric Church was pretty good. As was Keith Urban and John Cougar.
Worst: FGL, Zach Brown Band (seriously, awful and they’re normally pretty good). Luke Bryan was just okay. Sam Hunt was also, just okay.

And Michael Costello from Project Runway designed Little Big Town’s Girl Crush performance outfits. OMG that jumpsuit!
