Still Star-Crossed: Shondaland Sells Romeo and Juliet Sequel Series to ABC

Have you ever wondered what became of the Capulets and Montagues after Romeo and Juliet killed themselves? … Well, too bad, you’re about to find out.

Shondaland’s Still Star-Crossed, a one-hour drama about the fallout from the legendary lovers’ deadly acts, based on Melinda Taub’s 2013 novel, has been sold to ABC, our sister publication Variety reports.

Heather Mitchell, who has worked on Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, will write and executive-produce, with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers attached as non-writing producers.

(Also, my condolences to any CW junkie who thought this might be a follow-up to the short-lived alien drama Star-Crossed. It is not.)

Fans of Taub’s book, are you excited to see it make the leap to TV? Non-readers, does this sound beyond crazy to you? Whatever you’re feeling, drop a comment with your thoughts below.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Will says:

That’s a bad title. Should go with something like “Fair Verona” or “Glooming Peace.” Just saying.

  2. Steven says:

    Sounds terrible.

  3. Tyanna Cooper says:

  4. Joy says:

So R&J will be ghosts? Zombies perhaps? Pass.

  5. Jax&Juice's Girl says:

Is that really the name of the show?……. It’s F-in awful. Anything that’s Shonda Rhimes (HTGAWM) i would watch but they need change that title.

  6. The title is pretty bad, but the premise sounds interesting? Has anyone read the book? Is it the same title?

  7. 221bsam says:

Shonda Rhimes & Shakespeare, what could go wrong? have you seen Scandal?! *facepalm*

  8. Reba42 says:

So, basically, “Boo-hoo-hoo, our kids died because we are idiots.” Next they’ll want to do a sequel to Hamlet, which has the same ending. Everybody died.

    • Nicole says:

A modern day Hamlet I could dig. Mentally unstable child returns home to uncover the truth about the death of their parent. They’re seeing ghosts, playing crazy, inappropriate mommy/son scenes (or daddy/daughter if you want to flip the genders), not sure who is in on the murder, Ophelia slowly cracking. You could always mix things up and change things around to keep viewers guessing. It’d be like Revenge. They could call it Vengeance. :)

  9. Charissa29 says:

Since anyone of interest or depth DIED in the play, sure let’s go for a guilt-fest of “Woe is us,our children died from our feud, but we won’t reconcile yet. . . .because drama. Ummm, pass! Thank you very much.

  10. Mark says:

Its official TV has run out of original ideas

    • Miranda says:

Shakespeare didn’t have any new ideas. R and J was from a poem by Arthur Brooke. Hamlet is from a 12th century Icelandic story. There are no new ideas.

  11. Wooster182 says:

Is it going to be in iambic pentameter? Modern day or 1400s? I also agree that a Hamlet miniseries would be way more interesting.

  14. Miranda says:

Agreed that this sounds like a terrible idea. What the hell is ABC thinking? The name of Rhimes is not enough.

  15. hellloitslate says:

Well after reading the book synopsis, this sounds interesting.

  16. Arabella says:

Well…since it’s Shondaland we’re talking about…spoiler alert: they’re all gonna die for sure

  17. Dr. M says:

Not to be confused with the 2014 CW series Star-Crossed. Apparently not a sequel.

  18. mine says:

after reading the book synopsis this doesn’t even sound remotely interesting

  19. Lizo says:

If there was any story *made* for Shonda to help tell, it’s this one. I can’t wait!!

  20. No that6 ABC Family has changed it’s name, can we chance ABC to Shondaland already?

  21. marysue says:

I have read this book and it ROCKS ! I very much look forward to seeing it come to life on TV !!!
