Cruel Intentions TV Series

Cruel Intentions TV Series to Follow Sebastian and Annette's Son

OK, this whole movies-becoming-TV-shows thing is starting to get Cruel.

NBC has ordered a pilot script for a follow-up series based on the 1999 Ryan Phillippe/Reese Witherspoon classic Cruel Intentions, our sister site Deadline reports.

The series would reportedly be set in San Francisco, where Bash Casey — the son of Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe) and Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon) — moves from Kansas to claim his previously unknown legacy after discovering Sebastian’s journals.

OK, let’s start with the obvious questions: Did Sebastian somehow get Annette pregnant before he died? Why does their son live in Kansas? Why is his last name Casey? And how is this show not being made for The CW?!

There is some hope with this one, though: The team behind Cruel Intentions‘ small-screen adaptation includes Roger Kumble, the film’s original writer and director, plus original producer Neal H. Moritz. They’re also working with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross, who put together the Unauthorized Musical Parody of Cruel Intentions, which was a huge hit in Los Angeles.

    Wow…

    Nothing
    But
    Crap

    is very desperate.

  2. C says:

No mention of the first stab at a “Cruel Intentions” TV series – “Manchester Prep” starring Amy Adams?

Yeah, it sounds like the ridiculously named Bash was put up for adoption by Annette after she gets knocked up by Sebastian, hence why he lives in Kansas and has a different last name.

    • Heh, you beat me to it by seconds, heh.

    • Ashbash says:

I feel like the child being put up for adoption is the best case scenario of why he lives in Kansas. Annette was widely known as the socialite who was saving herself for marriage and her and Sebastian definitely weren’t married when they did the deed. Either that or Annette quickly married a random so she wouldn’t have a child out of wedlock

I also think Annette got pregnant by Sebastian and maybe was forced to put the baby up for adoption by her family. When the movie ended, Annette was driving out of NYC and maybe she went to San Francisco to start over. That could explain why the series would be set in San Francisco.

  3. They tried this before with what became the second Cruel Intentions movie, which was originally the first two episodes of a TV series. Maybe this time they’ll succeed.

  4. Kate says:

That is so odd. But also really kind of freaky as the two actors have kids together….

    • Lo says:

AND Reese Witherspoon was actually pregnant when they filmed Cruel Intentions LOL

      • Beth says:

This has been addressed many, many times. She was not pregnant during filming. The film came out in March 2009 and Ava was born that September. Reese and Ryan have both said she was not pregnant during filming, and I think they would know before anyone else.

  5. Win says:

Haha – love that you used that picture, Mr. Swift! :)

  6. Ashbash says:

If Sebastian lived in upper east side Manhattan then why is his family inheritance in San Francisco?

    • herman1959 says:

Because the long-lost/never heard-of-before/dead relatives ALWAYS live far away. Plus, do we need another TV show based in NYC?

      • Ashbash says:

NYC shows aren’t that bad and if that’s where the movie was set I don’t see why they wouldn’t base the show there

  7. C says:

Also? Weird choice of network. Not The CW or MTV or ABC Family?

  8. Scott says:

Annette had moved to NYC from Kansas City on Cruel Intentions

  9. SayNay says:

Didn’t they already do this on Fox or some other network forever ago? Enough with the movie to tv remakes.

  10. Marty F. says:

I would have actually liked an immediate follow up, possibly picking up where the movie leaves off. Sebastian’s journal must have had dirt on half of the prep school, at least all of the girls he slept with (hell, he could have even had some tea on the faculty and teachers), so it would have been interesting to see the fallout of what the release of his journal does to the school with a pseudo Sebastian doing voice over watching over all his classmates. And assuming Katherine was expelled, who would have taken over her throne, Cecile? Or should I just finally watch Gossip Girl? :/

  11. Kansas Blutbad says:

    You can put it anywhere!

  12. Paria says:

Not watching unless SMG is cast

  13. kmw says:

Wow still more movie and tv rip offs. Does anybody at the networks have any original ideas? Not a good idea this one

  14. Thea says:

If they get Sarah to reprise Kathryn, I’m in. I’ll have to think on it, otherwise.

  15. Matt C. says:

This is completely random, but if they actually got Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon involved in some capacity, I’d definitely tune in. Other than Buffy, Kathryn was SMG’s most memorable character, so to see her reprise that role in a TV series would be pretty amazing.

    • Steven says:

I doubt Reese Witherspoon would want to be involved, but if they get SMG on board and maybe Ryan Phillippe for a few flashbacks i’d be all in despite the dumb and illogical premise.

  16. Mikala Hood says:

Love the movie! Not sure about this idea though :/ I’d probably check it out, but I think sometimes its just better to leave well-enough alone.
btw, Bash Casey is an awful name, they should work on that. Why can’t his last name be Hargrove. And also Sarah Michelle Gellar guest star anyone?

  17. LauraVLover says:

AWESOME! After so many years there’s finally this! LOVE it already! Bring It On! But please don’t cancel it after one season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. A fan of TV says:

Only worthwhile if SMG reprises her role and becomes his Mrs. Robinson-esque sex teacher. Otherwise forget this into the junkpile and don’t call it a reboot.

  19. DreamRose311 says:

Despite the perfectly adorable picture selection, I clicked on this expecting to be all grumbly about it… but reading about who all is behind it… I’m a little curious to see what would happen. NBC definitely seems like the wrong channel though.

  20. You asked some good questions tvline! :D

  21. Tyanna Cooper says:

Bash Casey is a terrible name. So pretentious . The show is already trying too hard

  22. HSo says:

Wouldn’t it be amazing and completely freaky if they got Reese and Ryan’s son to star in this?

  23. francine says:

when will this air ,and whos playing their sn abd will reese Witherspoon n the rest of the cast be there

  24. Katielyn says:

I’d probably watch it. I loved Cruel Intentions. Like one of my favorite movies EVER!!! And I’d be willing to be “Bash” is a nickname, his name is probably also “Sebastian” they were just trying to somewhat separate the characters. No Clue where the “casey” comes from though. Maybe Annette kept the kid and when she got married her husband adopted him or something
