Beneath copious sequins and thunderous applause lies the grueling life of a professional dancer, and Starz’s Flesh and Bone is determined to bring you into that world — bloody toenails and all.
In the exclusive video above, series creator Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) and members of the cast and crew take us behind the scenes of the ballet drama, which cast real dancers in the lead roles rather than using body doubles.
“It felt important that the world of the [ballet] company feel as raw and authentic as we could make it,” says director David Michod (Enlightened). Hence, the featurette offers many glimpses of the dancers as they make the “athletic sacrifice” — Walley-Beckett’s words — necessary to nab a spot in one of the world’s top troupes.
Flesh and Bone follows a young dancer, Claire (played by the School of American Ballet/American Ballet Theatre-trained Sarah Hay), who contends with a troubled past just as she joins a prestigious ballet company in New York. The cast also includes plenty of American Ballet Theatre principal Irina Dvorovenko and Center Stage‘s Sascha Radetsky, while Center Stage‘s Ethan Stiefel served as a choreographer for the series.
The drama bows on Sunday, Nov. 8. Press PLAY on the video above to take a look behind the curtain.
