Ninja Warrior Renewed by NBC

That whooshing sound you just heard was American Ninja Warrior effortlessly clearing another obstacle.

On the heels of delivering its largest audience ever, the competition series has been renewed for a fifth season on NBC, the network announced today.

American Ninja Warrior opened this season with 5.9 million total viewers and a 1.8 demo rating, and went on to best ABC’s Bachelorette in head-to-head competition on multiple occasions. Most recently, the show drew 7.2 million viewers (an all-time high) and a 2.1 rating (its best demo number in three years).

Hosted by Matt Iseman and former NFL player Akbar Gbajabiamila, and co-hosted by Kristine Leahy, American Ninja Warrior tests competitor’s endurance, balance, upper body and grip strength through grueling tests including the Warped Wall and the Salmon Ladder. Three previous seasons aired on G4.

The current season finale will air Monday, Sept. 14 in a special three-hour telecast (8/7 c on NBC), while new episodes will begin filming in spring 2016.

Yes! But can we please get rid of Akbar? Almost the whole show I’m yelling SHUT UP AKBAR!!!!

I love the original – perfect combination of jokey & serious contestants and we see them cheering each other on, willing the serious to do the best they can (love all that). I despise the UK version – the crowd and the hosts desiring/demanding failure in every one who tries the course. As for NW US, though you’ve got the “wanting them to succeed” stuf by the bucket load, there are no fun contestants anywhere which means the show comes across as terribly serious, and an hours worth of that is too much for me.. I will still watch and look forward to the new season but this show is best recorded then watched on fast-forward.

It’s funny that since ANW started airing, not a single episode from the original Japanese version can be found. That is much more entertaining than what they show us every Monday. Too many back stories and not enough people failing miserably.

I LOVE this show. It’s the only sport I care about. I know I’m in the minority, but I’m so excited watching American Ninja Warrior. I look forward to it. I wish it was on more than once a week.
