Trump-Fueled GOP Debate Draws Record 24 Million Viewers to Fox News

Fox News played its Trump card (so to speak) and reaped big rewards on Thursday night.

Indeed, the cable news channel’s coverage of the first 2016 Republican Presidential Debate — featuring front-runner Donald Trump — drew a record 24 million viewers, making it the highest-rated primary debate of all time, regardless of political party.

What’s more, the massive audience was almost eight times that of the 3.2 million folks who watched 2012’s kickoff Republican debate.

Trump, naturally, retweeted his campaign adviser Dan Scavino’s boast about the debate’s metered-market rating being bigger than even the widely seen FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Surprised by the whopping numbers for Trump’s showdown with Cruz, Rubio, Bush, et al? Sound off below!

I’m hoping we get nuked soon, we don’t deserve to live. Where are the soviets when you need them?

  2. Sheryl says:

The only time I have ever watched Fox News. Proving miracles do happen.

  3. Julia says:

I think most people watched to see the insanity that is Donald Trump rather than genuine interest in the GOP candidates. Time will tell…

    • maggie says:

So true. The election is still 15 months away. No one is going to take it seriously until the Primaries start in February. I watched the “debate” to see Trump make a fool out of himself, and I wasn’t disappointed.

  4. Joey says:

I don’t know why people are surprised by this news. When you hand a presidential debate over to a single network and other networks are legally forbidden from broadcasting it, of course ratings will be high, no matter how horrendous the candidates are.

    • JBC says:

You can watch the next 2 GOP Debates on CNN in September and another on CNBC in October I believe, not sure of exact dates.. Do you just not watch Fox News because POTUS always puts it down? We all must think for ourselves. Fox and CNN both do a decent job with news in my opinion.

      • Diva Diary says:

Fox is the least trusted news network and that is a fact. CNN actually is the most trustworthy, but Fox is put down because it deserves to be put down. Just because they say it in a nice tone doesn’t make their statements factual.

        • smartysenior says:

Here’s a Fact: Nielsen ratings for this year, FOX l.72 million prime time viewers…CNN 535. Conclusion from Facts: Fox is Most Trusted Network with most viewers daily. (MSNBC gets 316, least trusted).

          • Diva Diary says:

Just because you’re the most watched doesn’t mean anything. Rush has the biggest talk show on radio and that man spews lies left and right.

        • JBC says:

Trustworthy? You do know that this is a matter of opinion. People can check things out for themselves whichever networks they watch. I hear news on Fox that many other networks just avoid and i know that since I check out more than one network. .To each their own though. Citizens should think for themselves, not blindly follow everything the gov’t leaders tell us, especially if they may have something to hide.

          • David H says:

Don’t try arguing with the FOX-haters, JBC. They believe what they want to believe. Just enjoy it and be grateful there is finally an outlet for the 50% of the country that actually care about the issues that other outlets downplay or ignore.

          • Harry Sr. says:

These numbers speak louder then the whining rhetoric from the liberal left even though they don’t want to believe it. Get on the boat before you drown, it is what it is, believe it.

      • maggie says:

Each of those debates will be limited to one network. So CNN will benefit from the ratings for the one it will have, and CNBC for the one it will have. The point is that when it’s only shown in one place, of course that place will get the ratings.

Next year’s Presidential debates will be shown on about 7 or 8 channels at the same time, dividing the viewership among those channels.

  5. Khryssti says:

Even less excitement than the Season 13 AI final, though. Kind of a snooze fest except Rand’s hair tweets and The Donald’s self love (which is larger than Caleb Johnson’s even!) Which candidate does Scott Borchetta like? That’s the question…

  6. Erica says:

The whole thing felt like a two-hour SNL skit. And REALLY made me wish SNL wasn’t on summer hiatus

  7. After being a faithful viewer of Fox news.I was very disappointed in this so called debate. It was more of a witch hunt for Mr Trump.I guess Kelly drank the kool aid and Fox news is now on my blocked channel. So sad.

    • Jake says:

Donald Trump is an arrogant douche. That man gets everything he deserves. I personally have known people whom have worked for him. He is a jerk to put it nicely!

    • MJ says:

I think Megyn Kelly did Trump a favor in getting all of the ugly stuff out and over with in the first debate. He survived. Now he can focus on going forward, not answering to his history.

    • Angela says:

Oh, please, “witch hunt”? Really? Trump’s a jerk, he deserves to be called out for all his ignorant and nasty remarks. He’s not worth defending.

    • maggie says:

It wasn’t a witch hunt. They asked a number of candidates about things they’ve said or done which could be used against them by Democrats. Trump’s question was regarding his disgusting comments towards women, which could be used to prove the GOP has a war on women. Trump used his response to make a veiled threat against Kelly, saying that perhaps he shouldn’t be nice to her, and to complain about her treating him poorly. Please, if he can’t handle a question about things he’s said without getting bent out of shape, how is he going to handle dealing with foreign leaders or even Congress? Politicians are always asked to explain things they’ve said or done, and if Trump’s response is always going to be name calling and playing victim, he needs to go back to reality TV.

      • Angela says:

Exactly. Considering the GOP does seem to have an issue with trying to gain more female voters, it doesn’t exactly look good for them to have a candidate who says things about a woman being pretty when on her knees or calling women pigs or mocking their looks in any way, shape, or form. Criticizing a woman’s policies is one thing (even then, though, there’s respectful ways to do so). But insulting a woman’s looks-I don’t care who the woman is, whether it’s Rosie O’Donnell or Megyn Kelly or Hilary Clinton or whomever-it’s insulting and not the sort of behavior we should accept from a presidential candidate. Trump acted like an immature child and he got called out on it. If he can’t deal with it, that’s his problem, not anyone else’s, and his behavior is nothing worth defending. It shocks me that people actually see no problem with his comments about women.
I said this elsewhere, but it was so much easier to ignore Trump when he was on “Celebrity Apprentice”, since I never watched that show. Now so long as he stays in the presidential race, he’s harder to avoid, and the fact that people actually support him because he “speaks his mind”, without bothering to notice or care about just how stupid and ignorant 99.9% of what he says actually is, is utterly depressing as hell. I think he will wear out his welcome soon, mind…but I shudder to think of what it will take for that to happen. He should’ve been laughed out of the presidential race the very first day.

  8. Sorry Trump, I didn’t watch because I want to vote for you, I watched to see you make a mockery of an already laughable system. Props to Kelly for calling you out on your misogyny.

  9. Tony Lang says:

Let’s all hurry up and have a good laugh. ‘Cause soon we may no longer any reason to.

  10. Temperance says:

I actually wondered how many short busses were waiting to take the candidates home afterwards. That was the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen since GW Bush tried to talk on camera.

    • MJ says:

Yes, the neurosurgeon, the ophthalmologist and all of the attorneys are complete morons. *rolls eyes*

    • iTriggered says:

Next time you are going to be ableist, maybe you can try to not be…

    • tvjunkie says:

Then you apparently haven’t heard about Hillary’s lame excuses for using an unsecured personal email server for sending classified information. And you apparently haven’t heard about Obama’s pathetic excuse of a nuclear treaty with Iran, which guarantees they’ll get nuclear weapons and a massive influx of cash so they provide significantly more assistance to terrorists in an effort to destroy the US and Israel.

    • rguzman says:

As long as there are people like you around making a mockery of our political system, our country will continue to sink. People like you who cannot look objectively and see the mess Obama, Hillary, Kerry & Company have made of our country really belong in Bellevue Hospital in New York. The founding fathers must be turning in their graves as they see how much stupidity is shown by many of our citizens.

  11. Jill says:

DONALD TRUMP is a proven winner! The USA is all about opportunities and a better way of life. There is no better role model then “THE DONALD” who was raised by very smart and hard working parents, who has and lives by American traditions.

He has a brilliant business mind and he’s smart, educated and not afraid to speak his mind , or the truth! He has a wonderful family and smart, well mannered and educated children.

He has had it all, lost it all and now has it all again! Hes obviously done many things right!

  13. Harry Sr says:

Not surprised, America is getting fed up with the so called professional politicians and want to try something other then the BS we’re being fed. Every time you ask them a question they act like a typical lawyer and give you a lie they say is not a lie because of the way their answer was worded. One very good example compliments of Mr. Clinton ” I did not have sexual relations with that women ” or ” the” is ” answer and then they have the nerve to treat you like you’re in school by explaining why you should not question anything they tell you and then along comes the liberal press and they tell you how dumb you are and you should believe anything they present to the public.

  17. sandy says:

Fox news need the ratings Donald keep making himself an ass SO the reason people keep listening to him every time
is because they want to hear what more nonsense he will say. Donald stop being
a hypocrite and a clown the White House don’t need that
