Kelly Osbourne The View

The View Co-Hosts: Kelly Osbourne Was Misunderstood, Not Racist

Despite Tuesday’s on-air kerfuffle, there’s no bad blood between Kelly Osbourne and the ladies of The View.

At the top of Wednesday’s episode — for which Rosie Perez was unfortunately absent — Whoopi Goldberg defended the former Fashion Police host, insisting that she was misunderstood by viewers.

(In case you missed it, during a discussion of Donald Trump’s immigration policy, Osbourne posed this question: “If you kick every Latino out of the country, then who is going to clean your toilet, Donald Trump?”)

“The point she was trying to make is that Trump’s stance on immigration will only hurt the people [he’s] counting on,” Goldberg explained, adding that people are often misunderstood on live TV. “You try to get your point in, and you try to hit it, and you sometimes step in dog doo. … Your head works faster than your mouth, it happens.”

Raven-Symoné also jumped to Osbourne’s defense: “I’m best friends with Kelly. … I don’t think she’d be a racist if she was friends with me.”

Perez, for her part, already apologized to Osbourne for the misunderstanding in a tweet on Tuesday:

So there you have it, folks. Nothing more to see here.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Carol says:

How could you defend Kelly on her comment without bringing up how she dished her co star on fashion police Julianna for her mis guided comment on fashion police. Kelly owes her a apology.

    • Belle says:

      AMEN!!! Why the double standard????

    • Kathleen says:

      I agree 100%

    • Jss0058 says:

Except Julianna’s comments were taped and according to Kelly she warned them about the joke and they still chose to use/air it. So the circumstances aren’t exactly the same. I do think Kelly could have been a little more forgiving and understanding in her reaction though

      • Mary says:

If you believe that Kelly did warn them, the operative word being they chose to use/air it. Clearly the producers of the show had the final say, Gulianna was just doing her job I don’t believe she had any control over the final production.

        • Allison says:

I agree but at the same time Kelly knew that anything she said while recording had a possibility of being aired. Although her response could have been harmless I don’t agree that it’s all the producers fault. They could have gone about it differently but Kelly was still the root of the problem

      • Lucifer says:

Kelly was so “worried” about that joke that she laughed during it…

      • Savannah Skies says:

lol, so Julianna’s comments were written, whereas Kelly’s comments came directly from her mouth. I’m thinking the difference is not what you thought.

    • Candy says:

      Absolutely

    • Carla says:

      Agreed!!!

  2. Diane says:

At least these ladies backed their fellow panelist in this misunderstanding. I wonder why Kelly didn’t do the same for her longtime Fashion Police panelist.

    • Geo says:

Because Kelly wanted an excuse for leaving what she saw as the sinking ship of “Fashion Police” and she walked over her supposed “friend” Giuliana to do so. Kelly never had a problem with the far more extreme things Joan Rivers said over the years, but she pretended to be in a huff over something Giuliana said that was less than what Joan typically said six or seven times in even the first few minutes of every show. At least Kathy Griffin left by just acknowledging she was a poor fit and without dissing her co-hosts as an excuse. Kelly could have just said “I don’t want to do this anymore without Joan,” instead of trying to ruin Giuliana’s reputation. It was ridiculous and disgraceful.

  3. Will says:

Definitely a case of Kelly being a hypocrite. Giuliana Rancic must be loving this!

  4. Nana3 says:

Nicole Wallace was absent not Rosie Perez.

  5. melknowl says:

does Rosie perez’s tweet sound secretly sarcastic to anyone else?

“you’re heart is so pure & rightous”

    lol

  6. Lauren says:

I hope Kelly has learned something from this. I also hope she gave Giuliana Rancic call and extended an apology to her. She could have stood behind Fashion Police and her co-host after Rancic said something that was clearly written by someone else for her to say. Instead, she lashed out and distanced herself from the show. How would Kelly feel if the same thing had happened on the view?

  7. Sara says:

This isn’t the first time Kelly has done something with moderately racist undertones and then exclaimed “You misunderstood!” How many more times will she do this and be defended by Hollywood?

  8. Rachel says:

    Double standard in Hollywood? Shocker!

  9. Scott says:

that’s funny, if a Republican had made that comment they wouldn’t be getting the benefit of the doubt

  10. tvjunkie says:

BS, Kelly’s comment was racist period. Whoppi lost what little credibility she had with her repeated defenses of Cosby. You gotta love how the view likes to promote double standards like the hypocrites they are.

  11. Jss0058 says:

Any idiot with half a brain could see the point Kelly was trying to make…she just chose her words very poorly. She apologized and now we can move on

I will say the difference between this and the Julianna situation is that Julianna comment was taped and Kelly said she specifically warned them about that comment and that they shouldn’t make it. However, I do hope this has made Kelly a little more forgiving

  12. Kim says:

I’m pretty sure what Kelly was trying to say was not everyone is willing to clean toilets or get their hands dirty, but most Latino’s are hard workers and willing to do what it takes to get ahead and provide for their family even if it means cleaning toilets. That does not make Kelly racist.

    • c-mo says:

So if I said white people are are entitled, lazy, slobs you wouldn’t be upset? Because what I was really trying to say is that there are one or two white people that make the entire race look bad. And yes I’m a Latina who doesn’t clean toilets for a living.

      • DC says:

Well, there is only a very small percentage of white people that are lazy while there is a HUGE percentage of Mexicans, especially in CA who do clean toilets and there is nothing wrong with that.

        • celestine dotson says:

who says there are a very small percentage of white people that are lazy? you? well i certainly beg to differ. i believe the proportion of lazy whites to toilet cleaning mexicans is directily proportional. you got to be pretty damn lazy not to clean your own toilet. and guess who the mexicans are primarily working for? you guessed it, el gringo !

    • Robert Alderman says:

I agree. I feel that her comment was intended to be a jab at Trump who wants to deport the same people he has hired to build and/or clean his hotels. The comment was taken out of context.

  13. AngelWasHere says:

Oh please it was racist. She even topped Guliana with that one. Why would she even associate Latinos with cleaning toilets? People who aren’t borned with gold spoons in their mouths have to do the dirty work sometimes and its not just Latinos doing it.

    • Jss0058 says:

Because it is a fact that illegal immigrants in this country frequently take on the manual labor jobs that others don’t want to do. Why would she mention Latinos?…maybe because there is an entire Lifetime series built around that concept ‘Devious Maids’ Again poor word choice but she was pointing out that Trump is stepping on the very people he probably depends on for their work.

      • c-mo says:

Im sure what you meant to say was that immigrants, in general, regardless of their legal status or ethnic background, take jobs that are more manual in nature. And I’m sure you’re not a racist because you have Latino and African American “friends”.

        • Jss0058 says:

No i meant illegal immigrants. …is it incorrect to point out that most of the jobs done by illegal immigrants are manual in nature? There are studies that have been conducted on that very topic. It’s a fact.

  14. K says:

Giulianas comment was clearly 100% not racist, Kelly still attacked her to build up her own publicity. I hope Kelly gets the same treatment as Giuliana did.

  15. Jooshua says:

I thought she was making a joke about the rich elite commonly employing illegal immigrants. I thought she was saying “Mr. Trump, how can all the illegals be criminals while half of them are employed by your family/friends/neighbors?” It just didn’t come out right.

  16. Larc says:

I never thought Kelly was being racist in her remark. It was clear to me she meant cleaning Trump’s toilet would be his idea of appropriate work for Latinos. I can’t understand why all the uproar except for some people who have nothing better to do than keep a constant vigil for something to get offended about.

  17. LKE says:

Seriously? Kelly was “misunderstood” but Guilana was wrong for what she said. Double-standard much, Kelly.

  18. Suzanne agnew says:

she’s a racist and a horrible friend. period

  19. leo21 says:

First of all, Kelly’s comments were made truly on live TV. Guiliana’s were not – they were scripted, taped, unfunny and rudely directed at someone who was a friend of the show. Second of all, no had to tell Kelly she messed. She gave a sincere apology the first time and didn’t have to be dragged into making one like Guiliana. We all make comments that hurt others but Kelly at least set an example on how to be accountable. Be upset about what she said but don’t make it out as if this was worse than what happened on Fashion Police.

  20. I dont like Kelly Osborn. She is oportunistic, hypocrite, & racist too!!

  21. arial2 says:

Why are we suddenly so politically correct? I’ve tried to remember any TV drama or comedy in recent years where household help were NOT Latino and I can’t come up with more than one or two (and those workers were usually Asian or Russian). Given TV’s sterling examples, it’s no wonder people think “Latino” when they think household help. Why has no one whined about the obvious casting of immigrants instead of including native born U.S. citizens in those roles? Talking of stereotyping. And speaking of the truth, because these are low-paying, unpleasant jobs that U.S. citizens don’t want to do. Same is true for harvesting crops. But all this would be too uncomfortable to think about, so let’s just blame Kelly Osborne for all our sins.

  22. Linda says:

    Karma.

  23. migdiachinea says:

    Fire the racist chic.

  24. Ana bitch says:

Kelly is rasict she shouldn’t even be in the view any more , Us Latinos do work harder then you white people !!

  25. Mississipi Jade says:

Latinos are beginning to annoy with their insecurities which cause them to go off in an absurd manner. Where is their culture? Most of them have or try to have ‘swagger’; in the tv programme “gang related” there was the infamous statement made by the hispanic gang leader that claimed brown is the new black. Why don’t they just stay brown? A majority of them tend to impose shallow stereotypes on themselves and at the end of the day, having underestimated themselves, they do end up at the bottom of America’s social chain. Truthfully, very few achieve prominence as well as extraordinary fetes in relevant fields thus, don’t blame Kelly Osborne for slipping when trying to defend your position; I truly believe she couldn’t think of anything better because neither can I. What should she have associated them with if not housekeeping? Very curious….

    • Isabella says:

Miss Jade…First, you need to learn how to spell, starting with your own name, “Mississippi” like the state, “program” not “programme” and “feats” not “fetes,” unless you are purposely attempting be deemed illiterate. Second, you need to stop watching GHETTO tv. Your reality seems to be defined by GHETTO tv shows. What can you expect to learn or to teach when you waste valuable time watching GHETTO tv shows? Third, I hope you do not base all of your thoughts and all of your principles on what a CHUNKY JUNKY thinks! Fourth, what you think about people depends on your background. Your comments make you sound as if you are jobless; hence, all the time to watch tv, and live in Section 8 housing; hence, no exposure to prominent multicultural figures. All of my immediate family have earned degrees and all have great careers. Personally, if I were to think of housekeepers or janitors, I would think black, because that is what I have seen. If I were to think criminals, jobless, lazy, uneducated, welfare, ditto. You see, it all depends.

  26. weberfan2003 says:

So, her comments were misunderstood, but other people’s comments were racist? So only people they don’t know or like are racist. Sure. No double standard there. Hypocrites.

  27. Sara says:

So according to the view this excuse works for Kelly Osbourne but according to their actions it doesn’t work for most other people in the world…

  28. DC says:

She meant every word she said. They all think that majority of Mexicans in the US clean houses and preform other manual labor what others won’t do. At least a Trump stands by what she says and means but others don’t. On top of it, you make Trump’s comment to be against all Mexicans and we know that’s not the case. Don’t make excuses fir Kelly.

  29. hughes56 says:

The point she was trying to make was who is gonna clean her toilet. She meant exactly what she said. Wonder if Whoopi would have went to bat for her if she had said something about blacks?

  30. girliegirl2912 says:

    Oh, BS…she was being Racist!

  31. johnchip says:

Kelly, she is a nice girl, I like her, Misunderstood? I don’t think so. Don’t make ‘nice’ just because she’s Kelly Osbourne. She put her dumb foot in her big mouth. What do you expect after years of drug abuse and growing up in that family. Very little “filter’ training in that household. Move on, she’s still a kid, but don’t make excuses for her bad behaviour
    .

  32. johnchip says:

I like Kelly. But don’t make excuses for her lack of ‘filters”. She has none growing up in that family of hers. She put her big fat silver foot in her mouth.

  33. Savannah Skies says:

She wasn’t misunderstood, she said exactly what she was thinking. The only difference is that the left are allowed to “misspeak,” while the right is pilloried for it. I’m not against the pillorying either, I would just like some consistency.

Kelly Osbornes only interaction with Mexican immigrants, legal or not not, has been as maids. End of discussion. She should now apologize to her co-host on her former show, and show her the same courtesy that was shown to her by The View panel. But that won’t happen. Because Kelly projects her bigotry onto all others. And that’s the real problem with Kelly.

  34. George says:

How is it even remotely possible not to take that as a racist comment?? Did Kelly KNOW that Donald Trump employs Latino people? Was she certain that if he had Latino people removed from the country that this would hurt his toilet cleaning issues? Right. She made the broad sweeping assumption/statement that Latino people clean toilets. And why is this? Because she lives in California where there’s a large population of Latino people who work in the house service industry. I wish she’d just sliver away.

  35. Candy says:

Wasn’t guiliana in the same boat when Kelly pounced on the opportunity to bring her down by accusing her of bein racist?

  36. Les2015 says:

She is not a racist, however she IS a hypocrite. She owes Guiliana Rancic one heck of an apology. The irony is that Rancic’s joke wasn’t even racist or even written by her, it was making a joke about Hippies, not any particular race.

  37. contessa says:

I have always found that when you ay something without thinking, it’s usually a true image of what you’re really thinking. KARMA will usually come back and bite you in the butt.

  38. Yeah right, just popped out of her mouth too easy. And didn’t she excoriate someone else for a mistake?

  39. V says:

there is more to this story- that they are not saying; it was reported that Rosie was FORCED by the network execs to apologize more than once…she was and IS pissed about that comment…its no coincidence that she was absent on this show

  40. Wendy says:

I don’t believe Kelly is racist, she’s just stupid

  41. laura says:

I believe she was attempting to point out that Trump probably employs hispanic housemaids and although he complains about people crossing the boarders. He does not have a problem paying them to clean his toilets.

  42. A says:

LMAO…get real….she is a loser and stop making excuses for her….

  43. Jill says:

What I would like to know is if what G. Rancic said (and was written by the writers of the show), was offensive and racist, then why wasn’t Kelly’s comment considered stereotypical and racist? Apparently it WAS considered racist and offensive if Rosie P. felt insulted. The fact that she was forced to apologize for getting upset when Kelly was the offender, is actually also racist. What’s wrong with this picture?

  44. evone says:

    Bull Sheet!

  45. eli says:

See Kelly……what goes around comes around. “Julianna”. Learn from this. Then call her and tell her that you know exactly how she felt and how sorry you are. You are no better.

  46. eli says:

I used to like whoppi until she started working on the view now that I see what she really thinks about important matters “I DON’T LIKE HER ONE BIT”. The view executives are really messing up. I think they need to be replaced. ASAP…….!

  47. michael says:

IT WAS A RACIST COMMENT LETS NOT SUGAR COAT IT

  48. P Bastian says:

Kelly may not be racist–however, as a professional host, she is not ready for prime time. You don’t get a pass for ignorance.

  49. Vanessa says:

Buttttttt…..she started the flack of Guliana’s ‘racist’ JOKE that someone else wrote for her. Please get the Osbournes and the Kardashians off of television.

  50. Joe says:

She was right on with her comment, why cant we tell it the way it is.I polled 24 households on who cleans their toilets, guess what, all Mexicans.
