The Comedians Cancelled

The Comedians Cancelled at FX

The fate of The Comedians is no laughing matter; FX has decided to axe its Billy Crystal-Josh Gad comedy after just one season.

The freshman series, which starred Crystal and Gad as fictionalized versions of themselves, premiered in April to mixed reviews; its 13-episode run officially ended in June.

Showrunner Ben Wexler broke the news himself on Twitter:

TVLine’s Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the loss of The Comedians.

    YOU TAKE THAT BACK

  2. Jared says:

Not surprised at all. I personally don’t get the appeal of Josh Gad.

    • Britt says:

Maybe, but Billy Crystal? He makes everything better.
      I loved the show.

      • Blerg says:

Maybe, but I’m almost 25 and the only thing I know about Billy Crystal is that he host an award show for a while and was in Monster Inc.

        • Bob Backus says:

I know this will sound annoying, but have you ever heard of DVD? But, maybe you shouldn’t waste the time watching Crystal’s earlier stuff because when you do you’ll see how pathetic the imitators of today are.

    • Helen says:

I don’t get his appeal either. He’s not funny.

      • Britt says:

To you. He’s not funny to you.
And that’s no reason to cancel the show.

        • Bob Backus says:

Apparently not funny to many, many people otherwise they would have watched, they didn’t hence the reason to cancel the show. I think he’s pretty funny but the show was absolutely horrible.

  3. Dani says:

Josh Gad TV show poison? At least he has Frozen 2 and movies.

  4. Julia says:

Bummed. This show grew on me. Josh Gad and Billy Crystal were great together.

  5. AT says:

I’m bummed too. The show got a lot stronger as it went on and was pretty funny towards the end.

  6. Holly Manley says:

The show is horrible. Crystal wasting his talent on something that was not funny and crass.

    • Patrick says:

Admittedly, I only saw a few eps, but it was pretty unwatchable. Plus, it obviously thought it was the funniest thing ever. I hate those smug shows, which are at best OK, but that obviously think they are producing a superior version of Seinfeld/MASH/Simpsons.

    • Alienate says:

“Horrible” is too high of a praise. “Unwatchable” was my take on it.

  7. rowan77 says:

I love Josh Gad and Billy Crystal, but the show was just awful. The storylines were obvious, the jokes were hackneyed. Both men deserved better, hopefully now they’ll find it.

  8. N says:

There were a couple times during the season when Billy or Josh would remind everyone how many awards Billy Crystal had won during his career. It was during these times I would be absolutely dumbfounded as to why he willing chose to do this awful show. Everyone who took part in The Comedians went down a notch.

  9. Helen says:

Didn’t like. Was not funny! No loss.

  10. c-mo says:

The premise was very good but the execution was not enjoyable. Not only did it cease to be must see, I actually forgot it was on until I was desperately searching for something to watch on on demand…needless to say I passed it by without guilt.

  11. JEF says:

I loved the show, I thought it was smart well-done and had lots of potential. I enjoyed the chemistry between Gad & Crystal as well as the many of the other characters on the show Kristen Laybourne was awesome! I am bummed and will absolutely miss it.

  12. Preacher Book says:

I just couldn’t watch it. Tried, but the overall hostile tone between the main characters in the first few episodes just turned me off. No surprise.

  13. PixxieTrixxie says:

Meh – I kept forgetting when it was on. That says it all.

  14. Bob Backus says:

Absolutely horrible, stupid, and unfunny show. I would say it did a disservice to the 2 main stars, but they liked it, so it doesn’t have that excuse. Frankly, the biography premise of the show is old and very stale. It’s a somewhat funny technique, but once it’s done properly every other imitation is pathetic. This show was pathetic and a huge waste of time.

  15. Bill says:

    Wasn’t a fan, watched 2 episodes

  16. Buck says:

Josh Gad isn’t funny. FX stopped trying to shove him down our throats. Thank you FX.

  17. Armory says:

I am not surprised. Just another series that was not worthy of interest.

  18. Armory says:

I wasn’t interested; I had never heard of Josh Gad, and I missed nothing!

  19. Boozer says:

I loved the show…just found it and now cancelled?!?!?

    Come on FX…keep it going!!

  20. dman6015 says:

Guess the world wasn’t ready for good, old-time comedy. The world’s too cynical now.

  21. Walkie says:

It just never clicked. Had some funny moments but was too inconsistent.

  22. Metl Mann says:

Well that’s too bad, we liked it a lot. I think a lot of the “I hated it ” comments are just Internet BS. The show was good, as was the writing and acting.
