American Idol's Top 9 Theme and Mentor Will Be...

The House That Kelly Clarkson Built will soon become “The Church of the Poison Mind.”

Yep, next week’s American Idol mentor will be none other than Boy George — who’ll help guide the Season 14 Top 9 through an ’80s Music theme, TVLine has learned exclusively. (What did you think the Culture Club singer was gonna weigh in on, hair metal?)

Next week’s two-hour live telecast will mark the reality singing competition’s move to a Wednesday-only schedule (8/7c on Fox).

Nine contestants will perform their ’80s jams for America’s votes, while a tenth hopeful (the lowest vote-getter from tonight’s Top 10 round) will belt one out in an attempt to earn the Judges’ Save*. (*Unless, of course, the Save is used tonight… then there’ll just be instant tears.)

Stoked about an ’80s invasion on Idol? How do you think Boy George will fare as mentor? Sound off below!

Why are they having a hasbeen mentor the contestants? Was he the only one who said yes?

    • qj201 says:

Yeah, he’s an old has been who is still releasing records and making more money in a year than you (or I) will make in your (my) entire life.

    • I saw an interview where they asked the contestants who would be the perfect mentor and a few said they would love Prince to come and mentor!

    • Temperance says:

Because he’s about a hundred times more awesome, famous, and successful than most of the artists out right now… oh, and he’s got a new record and new singles charting. Plus, there probably isn’t anyone that can teach young singers how to survive in life and the music industry.

    • Marie says:

  2. qj201 says:

Well if they are okay with Boy George…how about Adore Delano performing on AI?

  3. Brandy says:

Boy George will definitely bring in those young viewers!

    • Larc says:

      • Marie says:

When it’s 80s night, the only real question is who is stupid enough to sing “Against All Odds”?

  5. webly3 says:

I’m so sick of these recycled themes. :( There are so many other options.

  6. RD says:

    Kinda scraping the barrel,dontcha think? I mean,he’s a DJ these days…..

  7. Leticia Prado says:

    OMG, 80’s AGAAAAIN?????
Can´t we al least update it for one decade? Can’t we bring the 90’s again?

What’s the point of having good singers if the songs are aaaaaaaall the same?

    • Purple says:

The 80s were a good decade for hits. The problem is the contestants for some reason keep picking the same songs from the 80s or a song that does not show their vocal ability. There were many songs that were hits with fun lyrics and a good melody. Something that would not be boring at all. In that decade Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Prince and many other music careers became very successful. Those artists have more than one or two hits. There were rock bands and country musicians with plenty of hits also. Maybe they are required to pick certain songs from some type of list in order to prepare in time for the show or something like that. For example, during Motown week, I noticed many of the girls picked Michael Jackson hits when there were plenty of Motown hits with great female singers. They did not pick them. I just watched the movie soundtracks night and only a few picked out really good songs. There are dozens of beautiful songs from movies for them to pick from present and old.

The 90s had some really beautiful ballads. I remember hip hop and rap really ruled the 90s which is fine. Rock music and pop music did not seem as popular too me at that time.

      • daynamoet says:

I completely agree and to kind of piggy back off of that, I believe the contestants have known about these themes way in advance which would give them time to pick a song to see if it can get cleared. For instance, I heard Riley was looking forward to 80s week because he had a good song for that week. They’ve known about this theme at least since the top 24 so the fact that they’re just picking a song today for 80s week I really don’t believe. If they’re smart, they would’ve been thinking about this, just in case they make it and if a song is not on the “list,” they have time to get a song cleared we’ve never heard on 80s night. Personally, I’d love to hear someone sing Janet jackson, because I don’t think people ever sing her songs on idol and she was HUGE in the 80s, but no one will. I’ll hear Whitney I’m sure, but I hope not. I need MJ in 80s week too, no one ever sings MJ on 80s like WTF? He was the King of the 80s. Prince never gets cleared so I won’t even hope for that. Oh and no Time after time either.

    • T.B. Hammer says:

Imagine you had company tonight to watch the show – and two of the group were a young man and girl ages 18 and 19. And, this was the first time they have ever watched American Idol. What do you think their impressions would be??

    • darcy's evil twin says:

No, because the 90s were AWFUL – hip-hop, rap, that crappy grunge music with no melody, and then the grand finale – the horribleness of The Boy Bands. NO, NO, NO. The 80s were AWESOME. I’m sorry people here aren’t happy but I am thrilled! Bring on Pat Benatar, Hall and Oates, Rick Springfield, Bon Jovi, Big Hair, shoulder pads, and Miami Vice. Yippee!

      • joe privatez says:

Agree 90’s Bad! 2000-2010 not much better. The problem with many of the 80’s songs were the great ones had awesome ‘beat’ and great accompaniment. Very few power singers this year. Tyanna and dare I say Qaasim should shine. (Bet you $20 he does M.J.) Don’t now much about the country tunes of that decade, but hope Maddie finds something to suit her. Can’t wait to see what Joey and Quentin ‘re-arrange’.

  8. Rip Tide says:

And those TV ratings will continue to tumble for ‘ya. Don’t respond unless you really want to hurt me.

  9. Ronnie says:

And now I have Church of the Poison Mind stuck in my head lol

  10. Kay says:

I can’t believe they wasted their save!

  11. Marie says:

I hope they know not only are they lucky he’s going on idol” They have one chance too being better singer’s after he help’s them. BoyGeorge is the best writer-singer-Dj.

  12. Mark says:

This could be awesome if they just stepped away from the overdone songs from previous shows. The 80s produced a ton of good music, most of which has been ignored by AI and is waiting to be tapped. With the exception of Joey and perhaps Quentin, I’m not holding my breath in anticipation of inspired choices.

  13. jayne cooper says:

I myself think George will be amazing, and an asset to x factor just wish he was on the british one , he,ll also bring a lot more viewers , I will be watching an I don’t usually xxxxx

  14. I want the contestants to put some thought into their songs for 80s theme week. If the episode is Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Journey rehashes, I will vomit. I’m hoping Boy George inspires them to explore some of the decades lesser known songs. There is a tremendous opportunity for these contestants to shine if they reach beyond the all too familiar songs that have been done to death.

  15. Thom Griffin says:

Boy George is one among many of the corner stones of the pop sounds of the eighties. Yes, he is a great choice for mentoring.

  16. mallmannation!!! says:

I truly believe there’s a lot of want !!! On the stage hopefully the pressure of friends and family off stage !!!! Don’t pressure the contestants / fenominal artist more than the sheer fact of Being !!! .be yo self from here Kid !!!! .yeaaaaa boyyyyy. Instill some !! …..Love yaall ..
Peace piceses out !! Yo yo MA ! I’m sure George will do nothing . But adhere the introduction of eclectibility in it All .
    JoseblancowobeTight….

  17. stephanie says:

I am super excited about Sir Boy George mentoring those kids and he is so fabulicious these kids now days have no idea!!! 💕

  18. Edmund Chew says:

I’m sure the episode will be lots of fun. Boy George is full of English wit in a way Simon Cowell isn’t and in a way Joan Rivers adored!
Plus he follows the current artistes on the music scene :)
    Yay for 80s music!

  19. Siera says:

Seems ur too much this time Mike i guess. He is Boy George. No one can replace that. BG is BG. He will be a good mentor for sure!

  20. Woodmeister says:

Hoping against all odds that Joey sings “I Am a Chunk of Coal” a song by Billy Joe Shavers. It would be in her wheelhouse.

  21. Connie says:

yes the save was used correctly because Quassim had the performance of the night. plus the been killing good songs
