TVLine Items: Karen Gillan's Dark New Role, a Kathy Griffin Update & More

Karen Gillan HBO Pilot

Karen Gillan has found herself(ie) a new leading role.

TV’s erstwhile Eliza Dooley is among the many new additions to HBO’s Salem Witch Trials pilot The Devil You Know, written by Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, our sister site Deadline reports.

Gillan will play Jane Porter, the youngest daughter of Israel Porter (Strike Back‘s Ewen Bremner), the head of a powerful family involved with the historic trials.

Ready for more of today’s newsy nuggets? Well…

* Betty White (Hot in ClevelandThe Golden Girls) will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, airing April 26 at 8/7c on Pop.

* Kathy Griffin further discussed her exit from E!’s Fashion Police during an appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM talk show Monday. “I probably shouldn’t have taken the gig,” she conceded, adding that Lena Dunham (Girls) helped edit her resignation statement.

* Jack Wagner (General Hospital) tweeted that he’ll appear in a Season 3 episode of Showtime’s Ray Donovan:

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Lucifer says:

I never cared for Griffin in the first place and finding out she’s friends with a child molester makes me dislike her even more.

  2. Ray says:

Will the HBO show have an actual supernatural element like Salem?

    • WTF says:

I’d say probably not. If it did, then what’s the point? We already have a supernatural show about the Salem witch trials filled with sex, nudity and gore. What’s the need for a second?

      • Ray says:

Well, I wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility. What’s the point of the dozens upon dozens of copycat shows from networks, especially crime procedurals– CSI, NCIS, L&O, Chicago spin offs, etc. TV has a way of recycling the same premise over and over but just dressing it up slightly differently each time.

        • Katie_Mead says:

The point of these shows, is that people in their 70’s & 80’s still seem to like crime procedurals, no matter how many times they have seen each particular episode and forgotten about it, due to it’s general themes and plot.

  3. Drew says:

I would like to see Karen Gillan on Supernatural, Arrow or The Flash. It just seems like she would be a good fit for the geeky CW shows.

Sam did have a thing for an Amy Pond, after all. :)

    • Liz says:

To bad she is a Marvel commodity. She can bend but it’s probably somewhere in her contract that she can’t crossover

      • Drew says:

Ugh. Another reason to hate the Marvel universe. They keep good actors from quality work.
        Still, she could do Supernatural.

        • roedecker says:

Why does appearing in Arrow is “quality work” but not in Guardians of the Galaxy? Because of your tastes?

  4. Tran says:

Can’t wait to see Betty White at the Daytime Emmy Awards come April 26th. When will the Daytime Emmy Awards nominations be out?

  5. FatherOctavian says:

I guess this means she won’t be playing Brianna on “Outlander” :(

  6. K says:

Kathy Griffin saw the controversy around the ridiculous Giuliana-Kelly-Zendaya thing and decided to use it to quit and get publicity. It’s disgusting but I’m glad she’s gone, she knew what the gig entailed before she got it

    • HAP says:

Not so sure she knew. I’ve heard that the producers changed the ground rules and were scripting what everyone had to say. Hence that Rancic comment was actually written for her. And then there’s the rumor that the producers were looking to bring on Khloe Kardashian to replace Kelly.
