Ratings: Empire Holds Steady vs. DST, Idol and Criminal Minds Rise, 100 Slips

Empire Ratings Daylight Savings

After eight consecutive weeks of growth, Fox’s Empire faced its biggest ratings obstacle this Wednesday in the form of the annual Daylight Saving Time downturn, which thus far this week sent 26 of 31 broadcast shows sliding.

The tale of the tape? The already renewed sudser drew 14.9 million total viewers (ticking up 4 percent from last week’s finals) and a 5.8 rating (per finals), matching last week’s demo.

Opening Fox’s night, American Idol (9.7 mil/2.4) rose 9 percent and three tenths.

Elsewhere, per fast nationals….

CBS | Survivor (9.4 mil/2.2) dipped 4 percent and a tenth, Criminal Minds (10.4 mil/2.1) gained two tenths and CSI: Cyber (9.7 mil/1.7) ticked down versus its debut.

THE CW | The 100‘s Season 2 finale (1.34 mil/0.4) slipped 13 and 20 percent. Versus its freshman finale, which also aired out of an Arrow rerun, the already renewed drama was down 24 and 20 percent.

ABC | The black-ish “bloop-ish” special did 4.6 mil and a 1.5, mired in a sea of repeats.

Those crazy Empire numbers. That’s insane. Wouldn’t you agree?

  2. GuessWhat says:

    *Saving (singular)

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

      OKs.

      • Jane says:

I’m confused. How did Empire go UP in total DOWN in the demos?

        • More older viewers, fewer younger viewers. The young people are probably out somewhere having a steak or doing the twerk in a cocaine bathroom.

          • Patrick says:

Actually, all the major basketball conferences have started their championship tourneys. I wouldn’t be surprised if Empire were flat out exempted in some markets. Even in areas where it wasn’t exempted, some people just watched playoff hoops rather than a show they can DVR or catch on Demand this weekend.

        • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Happens quite often. It means, roughly, that among the audience they added, the viewers fell outside the 18-49 range.

        • herman1959 says:

Seriously though, it stays lighter longer, so less young folks were inside watching TV. Also, in my area the temperature actually topped 50 degrees for the first time this year.

        Haaa!

It is funny how DST is in effect for eight months for most of US and only four of ‘standard’ time – seems like we should be talking about the ‘standard’ time BOOST, rather than the DST deflation.

    Dang The 100 finale

    • Gerald says:

Dang, I don’t think those writers had any clue this show would last past the first season. They don’t have a sweet clue what they are doing.

      • wrstlgirl says:

I do really like the show but I can’t jump on the Clarke as a leader bandwagon. If a cold blooded murderer makes a good leader then they are all screwed, LOL!!

      • Et al says:

You and I are not watching the same show. Season 2 was phenomenal and an improvement on season 1 in every possible way.

        • wrstlgirl says:

I enjoyed s1 more than s2, mostly because I just felt it dragged on and on with the Mount Weather story arc with nothing really happening. But that’s my take on it.

          • A fan of TV says:

Based on your commentary, we like many of the same shows, but for totally opposite reasons. Its bizarre.

    And again why cancel HoD

  5. kmw says:

Lots of reruns last night, but Empire didn’t go down that much and will most likely adjust up. FOX has Wednesday nights. I know that Cyber held steady, but given the reruns it should have gone up

    No graph :(

  7. Tran says:

I have a feeling CSI: Cyber won’t last that long and the same thing should happen to Battle Creek. Don’t know what CBS has planned for its ongoing and grueling prime time schedule for next season during the upfronts come May.

    • lechatnoir says:

I too feel this version of CSI won’t last . It felt so early 2000 ish. Not bad but frankly forgettable. I predict in les oubliettes very soon.

    • I have to agree. I like the show, but they are trying to make it mixing of Scorpion and CSI. Scorpion is superior, but with CSI cyber you aren’t connecting to much with the characters. That and the fact they are trying to make the Avery character similar to Horatio. Time will tell though CBS is one of the few networks that seems to love to push out these types of crime shows and because of the demographic that watch, it may have a few seasons behind it.

What the hell is wrong with 100 viewers? You have the great finale, can’t tune in live, not cool!!!
