American Idol Sneak Peek: A Good Case for a Piano in the Audition Room

Every American Idol hopeful wishes he or she possessed magic keys to advance directly to Hollywood Week. And based on the following exclusive video from tonight’s Minneapolis auditions (8/7c on Fox), it looks as though Jacob Tolliver has 88 of ’em!

Indeed, while Jacob’s cover of “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” includes a solid vocal, it’s his work at the piano that makes this clip one of the more memorable auditions of Season 14.

While our preview ends midway through the judges’ comments, I’m wondering if Harry Connick Jr. will be able to resist the urge to leap out of his chair and join the kid in an impromptu jam session.

Press PLAY above to check it out for yourself, then scroll down and watch this week’s Reality Check in which Season 6 standout Melinda Doolittle and I dish the New York City and Kansas City tryouts!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

While he’s good…. he didn’t really sing a lot… Hate to nitpick, but this is a singing competition…

Funny funny funny!! Love this show. Yes-Harry and Keith were so disrespectful. Not good. Jax was great. Looking forward to see what she can do without the piano.

Entertaining, yes. Hate to disagree with Michael, but imo it wasn’t a particularly solid vocal. He won’t last very long unless he can be versatile vocally and sustain a song without the piano. Maybe his vocals will be better when he’s concentrating on them and not jumping around. But I enjoyed it for what it was.

A whole lotta jumpin’ goin’ on…

That was risky for him. He can sing really well. I’ve heard him do a few short sets in the last few years and he’s the real deal.

This kid is a NATURAL born musician/singer! Can’t wait to see him in Hollywood! He’ll go far!

Entertaining, but based on his singing it would be a no from me.

  10. Jacob is the real deal, if you go and check on Youtube he is from southern Ohio and performs with the drum major from Ohio State, who is also from southern Ohio also :-)

IMO, it proves the opposite. It’s an over-rehearsed performance piece which shows nothing about him as an actual artist. Entertaining? Sure, but it makes me want to hear less of the instruments rather than more.

I loved everything about Jacob Tolliver’s performance. The 50’s sound is perfect for his style of piano playing. He has fun with it and it shows and I like that! Don’t force him to ditch what he enjoys doing the most in his entertaining…..singing and rocking that piano!

Jacob was a hoot, but his voice was below average. The 16 year old who sand Etta James was decent. Vanessa had a fantastic personality and was natural singing her song. Not a great night for talent. Forgot to mention on another post, I liked Maddie singing Suitcase. She is pretty and a good singer. I believe she was 16 years old. As I said in another post, Savion was great and banjo playing Ellen Peterson was another natural singer with talent!
