Stephen Colbert's Late Show Start Date Revealed

Colbert Report End Date

Stephen Colbert has less than eight months to prepare for his new gig as host of The Late Show.

CBS on Monday announced that Colbert’s first live episode will air Tuesday, Sept. 8.

“He’s got almost all of his creative team from The Colbert Report coming to work with him,” CBS President Nina Tassler revealed during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. “There will be music on the show [and] he certainly will have guests on the show. Whether he starts with an opening monologue, he’s working on that right now.”

Tassler said it’s about “letting him do what he wants to do…. There will be parts that will be traditionally, and there will be things he wants to try differently.”

Additionally, CBS is “in conversations” with current host David Letterman about doing specials leading up to his sign-off. Letterman’s final broadcast will be Wednesday, May 20.

  1. Tran says:

Looking forward to it come September 8th. Colbert will do a great job for his new gig on Late Show.

  2. David4 says:

The exact date I figured months ago. I never understood why everyone thought he would take over in the summer, they always had reruns in the summer as everyone is on vacation.

    • TV Gord says:

Both The Late Show and The Colbert Report have always done new shows year round, with occasional weeks off. Neither show has ever taken the summer off.

  3. Chris says:

Glad to hear that he brought his team with him. I am sure he will be great. I am going to miss the Colbert Report dearly, though. :-(

  4. I Heart Damon Salvatore says:

Wow, that will be a birthday present for me! Thank you, CBS.

  5. Ram510 says:

    Why on a Tuesday?

  6. Becky says:

Can’t wait. I wish it was sooner, but this is no surprise. He’ll be terrific.

  7. Angela says:

Making a note of September 8th on the calendar, then :)! Looking forward to his return, and how he puts his own stamp on the late night show setup.

  8. dman6015 says:

Is CBS just going to show Letterman reruns from May until September?

    • TVGord says:

No, Tassler says they will air reruns of CBS prime time programming. That’s kind of lame, if you ask me, and it doesn’t exactly give James Corden a very good lead-in for The Late Late Show.
