Darlene Love's Final Late Show Visit: Watch Her Full Performance

‘Twas a bittersweet Christmas celebration at The Late Show on Friday, as David Letterman welcomed back a beloved guest for one last hurrah.

Darlene Love, who’s been belting her holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” for the past 28 years, returned to the Late Show stage for one last performance — and you’d better believe she went out with a bang.

A red ball gown, falling snow, a full band and choir… There’s no doubt about it, Ms. Love outdid herself this year. (Side note: CBS recently released this supercut of Love’s performances over the years, which is also a must-watch.)

“It’s been said that when this show closes, I’ll never sing this song again,” Love told Letterman before taking the stage. “That’s crazy! I said I would never sing it again on another show. … This is where it will end.”

What a delight. This is so sad. The end of an era.

Dave in a snazzy black suit with red tie, Jay Thomas hitting the meatball and retelling the Lone Ranger story, and Darlene Love in a sparkly red ball gown to sing her heart out while standing on a grand piano. It was a great episode!

If this doesn’t’ give you goose bumps, you weren’t listening!! “And THAT is how it’s done,”she said smiling through tears.” AMAZING!!!!

Why is it her final performance?

    • TD says:

This is her last performance of this song on a show, she says. Letterman is leaving in May, so this is the last Christmas show. Love has said she won’t perform this song on a TV show again because it’s been such a tradition for Letterman.

    • ummm says:

She has sung this song on Letterman every Christmas for, I think, 20 years. This is the last time on his show. She has said that, if asked, she won’t continue the tradition with Stephen Colbert. It was a thing she did for Dave.
