Whitford (The West Wing) has joined the cast of Showtime’s Happyish pilot, playing Jonathan Cooke, the morally ambiguous boss of Steve Coogan’s Thom Payne. The 30-minute pilot, which begins filming in New York this December, also stars Kathryn Hahn (Transparent) as Thom’s wife Lee.

* NBC has given a script order to a TV reboot of the 2000 film Frequency, written by Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver, per The Hollywood Reporter.

* My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos will play the biological mother of Casey Wilson’s character on Marry Me, ETonline.com reports.

* Jessy Schram (Once Upon a Time) and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) have joined the cast of Lifetime’s Lizzie Borden series, our sister site Deadline reports. Schram will play Nancy O’Keefe, a friend of Lizzie’s, while Banks will play Mr. Flowers, who manages Fall River’s finest prostitutes.

* Fox has released a new trailer for its upcoming crime comedy Backstrom, starring Rainn Wilson (The Office) as the titular — not to mention “self-destructive” — detective. Behold:

    Is NBC’s great plan to just try remaking EVERY movie ever made into a TV show? That’s all the pilot news we ever hear from them.

    That Happyish cast is shaping up amazingly. I didn’t really plan to check it out following PSH’s passing, but darn it, I’m back in! And am I the only one who is interested in Backstrom? Everywhere I look, people are hating on it. It doesn’t seem THAT bad.
