American Idol Promo: Are Past Winners the Secret to Season 14's Success?

Kelly. Carrie. J.Hud. Phillip. Jordin. And over 60 million records sold.

American Idol‘s newest Season 14 promo — available exclusively here at TVLine — uses the bold-faced names of its previous success stories, a rundown of their accomplishments and a “Superstars Made Here” tagline to differentiate itself from competitors that haven’t exactly rocked the Grammys, the Oscars and the Billboard charts.

“I was so happy ’cause the British man didn’t make me cry,” exclaims Season 1 champ Kelly Clarkson, kicking off the new video.

But the second half of the ad — which flashes the eager faces of Season 14 hopefuls over an optimistic jingle, “We’re just getting started,” is what Fox is hoping will lure reality junkies back for another round of the seminal singing competition when it returns in January 2015.

  1. Jared Munson says:

They used a promo like this on all fox on demand shows last year. It played so much I never wanted to watch idol again

  2. Lynne says:

And they completely ignored the winners that went absolutely no where.

  3. Lee says:

That ship has sailed. The show is old news now, and it’s not going to dominate the ratings again. This promo isn’t going to help.

  4. MAB says:

    The video is missing.

  5. They can only do this if AI KEEPS making “superstars”. I’d like AI to continue being that AI that it used to be, but it just isn’t and it’s very misleading to act like AI is still that show.

  6. Piers says:

Not all of the winners have been smashing successes, but many of the runners up have enjoyed improved careers. Idol is still the best of the lot in singing competitions.

  7. Chris says:

    What about Chris Daughtry (Daughtry)?

  8. Brock says:

Adam Lambert and Daughtry should be in there. Fantasia too. No one else has truly hit it.

Last season they made the worst Top 12 (13?) ever and I gave up. It was woeful.

  9. Would loveeeeeeeeeeee to watch this but i dont live in the US, any chance of putting it on youtube or an international friendly player? :)

  10. Gailer says:

Only simon can bring up ratings

  11. Brandy says:

YESSSS. I will be with this show til the end.
