Ratings: NCAA Finals Down Vs. 2013, Bones Up

NCAA Men's Final Four ChampionshipCBS’ coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament championship game — in which my youngest niece’s college bested my second-oldest niece’s alma mater — averaged 21.2 million total viewers and a 7.2 demo rating on Monday night (per finals), down 10 percent and three tenths from last year’s Louisville/Michigan final.

Elsewhere, there was not much to see….

NBC | The Voice (11.8 mil/3.5) dipped was up a tenth in the demo week-to-week. A special Dream Builders (5.5 mil/1.5) did much better than its Sunday outing, but obviously was far below Blacklist numbers.

ABC | Dancing With the Stars (13.9 mil/2.2) ticked down a tenth in the demo. Fun fact: Castle‘s “Disciple” encore drew the largest audience ever for a rerun — 9 million viewers.

FOX | An intellectually compelling and ultimately emotional Bones (6.5 mil/1.6) rose 14 percent in audience and a tenth in the demo; The Following (4.5 mil/1.4) added a handful of eyeballs.

THE CW| Star-Crossed (970K/0.3) ticked down a tenth.

  1. M. says:

    Go Castle (re-runs)!!!

  2. Jess says:

I am really proud of Bones upticking 2nd week in a row against hefty comp. Esp with all the NCAA hype before, during and after it aired….I think the game didn’t end until a bit into 8pm PST airing too. (Correct me if I am wrong) …It was a great and thought provoking Bones ep.

  3. David4 says:

The Bones episode was horrible. Can they bash the point of pot is good anymore?

Pot should be legal for everyone, not just the sick. No one has ever died from overdose unlike the tens of thousands that die ever year from drinking too much.

But this is Bones, not a special on medical weed.

    And go UConn! Repeat tonight!

    • Badpenny says:

I agree this episode of Bones wasn’t that great. The show has become about bashing people over the head instead of subtlety. The Wendell storyline didn’t need to be in a pot episode. That would have been an interesting sub-storyline in any episode of Bones, but in the pot episode it’s overload. It’s like the writer feels the audience is too stupid to keep 2 different stories in their mind at the same time so it all needs to be in one episode or we’re lost.

      • Anon says:

Disagree. It is not unusual for Bones to have a case and relate that to one of the team members personal journeys… They did it a lot with Brennan and the Foster Care system in earlier seasons, as an example….Actually it is a narrative norm of many tv shows.

        • Badpenny says:

As I said, Wendell could have come back at any time and his story would still valid whether the victim was a legal pot seller or a drowning victim murdered by mermaids. Having Wendell be intern while the pot story was going on is just bad writing. This had nothing to do with Wendell’s personal journey. This was just the writer trying to beat you over the head with legal pot and Federal laws in as many ways as they could in 42 minutes.

          • Anon says:

Wendell only mentioned his personal “weed” story due to the case. No case. No Wendell story on it. They both came hand in hand. It worked for me as a story narrative. Sorry it didnt for you….now ratings thread anyone? ;)

          • Badpenny says:

I guess the point I am trying to get across here is that doing both plots at the same time was overkill.
Imagine they did the pot episode this week but Daisy was the intern with an entirely different subplot. Two weeks later Wendell comes back as the intern and he is looking gaunt and weak and Bones, remembering that they just had a case with medical pot that doesn’t make you high, suggests to Wendell that he try pot to help with his symptoms. This leads to Wendell getting fired but Booth and Bones coming to his aid at the end and getting him a job.
Now one of those story types is beating you over the head with a subject in 42 minutes and the other is developing a story line with subtlety; as well as tying the show together – something that is greatly missing in Bones over the last couple of years, IMHO.

        • David4 says:

I actually agree with you both. They normally deal with the case with the characters and this week it was Wendell and pot. However it was handled horribly, just really weak writing.

And did anyone else get annoyed when they went “Look at the new tech we have, we had to make room for it in an old closet” and I went “WHY DON’T YOU JUST STICK IT IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE OLD HOLOGRAM COMPUTER!”. It’s like the first season of Bones is one show, seasons 2 and 3 are another and after that they just forget everything from season 3-4 and before.

  4. Anon says:

Go Bones! The ep has got people who watched it debating the Weed issue. Talking/debating about ANYTHING of worth is always a bonus in my book…Booth and Wendell’s friendship really shone the ep JMHO

    • catherine says:

I liked the insights to Booth’s FBI career and his friendship with Wendell outside of work, I wasn’t that was still going on. The law is the law and if you want to work for the Feds, you have to go by their rules. You know that upfront and Wendell knew it, he wanted to keep his pot smoking a secret until all his coworkers wrongly said it wouldn’t matter……well maybe not them, but it would to a jury or defense attorney. It was a good ep. Kudos to writer Keith Fogelsong.

  5. Sarah says:

I’m so proud of Bones. :)

  6. luvmypup says:

I just wish the ratings for Star Crossed would go up. The show just keeps getting better with more interesting storylines/mysteries. I’m afraid it never had a real chance in this time slot.

    • wrstlgirl says:

I’ve completely lost interest at this point. Aimee T is so unbelievable as a teenager I just can’t…..she looks way older. Granted none of the cast look to be that young but she looks mid to late twenties to me. And the story line is meh, very predictable IMHO. We’ll see how it goes.

    • ... says:

Debuting against the Olympics, getting paired with the lowest rated drama on the network, no real promotion to speak of, airing with two repeats in its first nine episodes – I know networks don’t make shows to lose money, but The CW has treated Star-Crossed really poorly.

  7. Patty says:

Great news about ‘Castle.’ Looking forward to ABC-TV’s 2014-2015 renewal announcement. The network usually makes its announcement in late April and/or some time in May.

  8. barbara says:

i thought it was great episode yes cam was following the law and angela and hodgins were just defending him but turned out nicely with booths help.. i have to agree about it should be legalized. maybe there would be a bit less crime as where we live people where we live get mugged shot just to get money for it

  9. K says:

    Go Castle!

  10. Babybop says:

So happy for Bones… But did anyone find it strange that someone going through chemotherapy would be in a lab with decaying flesh and, most likely, a whole host of bacteria? My mom couldn’t even go to the movie theater when she was on chemo for fear of catching something. That made it silly to me – let alone that the whole episode was a PSA about pot. Not it’s strongest installment.

    • Badpenny says:

Yeah, that bothered me too but most people are ignorant of all the problems Chemo gives someone – and by most people I mean the writers and audience – and so it gets overlooked in the rush to make their point.

  11. Lynn says:

Always happy to watch Castle! But this episode was especially engrossing and the story and acting was superb! Stana Katic’s performance was spectacular!

  12. The Dude says:

Cool on the Castle front, that was a great ep. Everyone was good in that ep! Re-new it already!!!!

  13. Teri Shannon says:

Great job Castle fans! Keep the viewership coming from April 21 to May 12th to end Season 6 on some very high ratings. Afterall, Castle is the greatest show on TV right now.

  14. Kate says:

Even better news for Castle with the final numbers- adjusted up to 8.99 million and went up .2 to a 1.5 demo rating. Hopefully this is the start of some good momentum for the last episodes of the season!

  15. DavidSask says:

Chance of StarCrossed returning for second season look slim. I am still mad that FOX treats Almost Human like crap which has better ratings but sucks the tit of the awful The Following!

  16. Jonathon says:

The Following was great once again. So glad it got renewed it really is an underrated show and I’m proud of fox for sticking with it. Total adrenaline rush!

  17. Mary Palmer says:

Stana Katic tweeted on twitter today about saying goodbye to some incredibly
Talented actors at the end of the 6th season and also posted a double picture with Castle and Esposito on the left side and Beckett and Ryan on the right.
The way I see it the main characters are: Castle, Beckett, Esposito, Ryan,
Castle’s mom and daughter, Lanie the ME,Beckett’s dad and of course the Captain. Are any of these characters gone from Castle in the 7th season. All of these people are vital to this show.
How about Senator Bracken? So who was Stana Katic referring to in the tweet today? Please tell us, we are in agony. We absolutely love this show and know it is probably getting the official nod for a 7th season. Please tell us that the main characters are coming back for the 7th Season.
One more question: Is there a chance that Castle might get moved to another day and time so that the Blacklist won’t be soooo overbearing with Castle on Mondays at 10 PM PDS TIME slot?
I hope you can give us some answers!!
    Thank you for reading this.
Hoping you will be able to give us the answers we all want to hear! The whole cast is so outstanding and talented and we would like to see all of the main cast of Castle next season! :-)
    Thank you again!

    • Rich Abey says:

      – Stana’s tweet was probably a tease. It’s very unlikely Castle would suddenly kill off several major characters when they have have killed off approximately 1 major character for the past 5 seasons (Cp. Montgomery in the Season 3 finale).
      – It’s also unlikely Castle will be moved to another time-slot given that ABC has no other suitable alternative to replace it. All the well rated dramas (Scandal, Grey’s, etc) are already well established in their own time-slots making it unlikely they will be moved to Monday either.

      • Patty says:

I believe that Ms. Katic was teasing us with her Tweet. It is doubtful that there will be major casting changes. Though not announced, yet, by ABC-TV, ‘Castle’ will return for the 2014-2015 season. Most shows are signed for at least seven years with a TV network. The network, of course, has the option of renewing and/or canceling a show at any time. ‘Castle’ has proved to be a winner for ABC-TV (and also for TNT in reruns), though, as commented earlier, I, too, wonder where all the viewers were/have been when ABC-TV has broadcast new episodes of the show. Happy viewing to all on: 4.21.14, 4.28.14., 5.5.14. and 5.12.14.

        • The Dude says:

Boy I hope she was just kidding. From what I’ve heard a show gets more expensive the longer it’s on so hopefully they didn’t have to let anyone go in order to cut costs. I know that a lot of people complain about Alexis being a brat but that’s how they wrote her this year for whatever reason. I love everyone on the show & would miss ANYONE if they were let go.

          • Rich Abey says:

Don’t think the expenses are gonna get in the way of a Season 7 renewal cause Castle is one of the least expensive procedurals on TV.

          • Patty says:

Yes, I agree with you, Rich. ‘Castle’ has proved to be a winner for ABC-TV. Just waiting for the network’s announcement for its 2014-2015 season.

  18. Rich Abey says:

Okay now that’s some very impressive numbers for a Castle re-run. Still wondering where the hell all these people were the past few months when live episodes gained only a 1.7 demo rating?

  19. gribouille1948 says:

ah contente pour CASTLE ; enfin les téléspectateurs américains se réveillent !
en France 6 millions de fans pour 66 millions de Français ; aux USA 9 millions seulement pour 200 millions d’habitants . Allez les US FANS – bonjour de France
