Pilot News: Psych's James Roday Joins CBS Relationship Comedy Good Session

James Roday CBS Comedy Pilot Good SessionWe have a feeling Psych‘s Gus is going to be very jealous about this one.

James Roday, who has played Shawn for eight seasons of the USA Network buddy-P.I. dramedy, has just booked the male lead on Good Session, CBS’ comedy pilot couples’ counseling.

Per our sister site Deadline, Roday will play Joel, a high-school guidance counselor who starts attending therapy with wife Lindsay when they can’t decide whether or not to have a baby. The pair quickly learns it has more to discuss.

Last week, Rich Sommer (Mad Men) was cast as Seth, Joel’s best friend from college.

Good Session will be written and executive-produced by John Hamburg (Meet the Parents) and Matthew Miller (666 Park Avenue); Hamburg also will direct the pilot.

I am so so so so so excited for James! This seems like it will be a good show and a good fit for him, definitely different than Shawn! He has a lot going for him with his movie Gravy and things are looking up despite Psych ending. Fun to note: Maggie Lawson, his longtime girlfriend has just gotten a pilot on CBS also (:

  2. Tamera says:

It’s hard to think of James Roday as any character other than Shawn, but I hope that it does well. I’d love to see him do more comedy on my TV!

    • Patrick says:

I feel like Roday will plays characters that are “Shawn” to some extent. He will dial up or dial down based on the project.

This HS guidance character will be an immature man boy who relates really well to the students he helps.

  3. psych-o says:

Man, I wish Dule Hill got cast as the best friend instead. Good for James Roday, but I’m really going to miss their dynamic!

  4. Liz says:

I wish the best success for him and the continued success for Dule (who I hope finds himself a role on another long running series!). Though it will take a bit for me to see him as anything but Shawn lol

  5. Heathers says:

Is this a comedy, or drama, or dramedy?

  6. davidsalazar23 says:

    we need him shirtless ASAP!

    • justsaying says:

why? he’s not exactly known for his physique.

    • bigdede says:

What? As fat as he is, no. He’s chubby and funny, that’s his thing. But I bet CBS will make sure he doesn’t get bloated again.

      • alyssa says:

In what world is James Roday fat?? I think he looks damn good. So he isn’t all toned and built…who cares?? I hate muscular guys. James looks perfect to me! (aka: like a perfectly healthy human being)

  7. Joey Padron says:

Happy for James. Hope his new show gets pickup.

  8. Kayla says:

Just going to pretend Shawn is undercover.

I will remain in denial FOREVER.

  9. TV God says:

Is it a multi camera or single camera comedy?

  10. A says:

I just felt an overwhelming sense of sadness that I won’t see Shawn and Gus together anymore (besides the thousands of times I re-watch old Psych episodes). RIP delicious flavor

  11. Andrew Hass says:

That’s great for James Roday.Even though Psych is ending he’s not letting any time pass before getting casted on another show.

  12. Tish jennings says:

I can’t believe its ending ! Did USA take over just to cancel them? Never missed it and will continue to watch reruns.

  13. Michelle says:

What ever happened to this show?!
